A group of 10 people from Phetchaburi on Monday began a 200-kilometre walk to campaign against bringing garbage from outside Phetchaburi into the province.

The group, led by Thirawat Namduang, adviser to a civil group in Tambon Nong Chumpol Nua, plans to walk for more than 50 days, starting out from a PTT petrol station in the Wang Manao area.

Their journey will take them through Khao Yoi, Mueang, Ban Lat, Tha Yang and Cha-am districts to the border with Prachuap Khiri Khan province, before they trek back to their starting point.

Thirsawat said the group would distribute leaflets along the way, urging local residents to sign their names against allowing any firm to open a factory to process garbage brought in from outside Phetchaburi.

He said he had learned that several companies were hoping to open garbage-recycling plants and garbage-fuelled power plants, as well as garbage-disposal plants that would treat rubbish from outside the province.

Locals would however gain nothing from such developments apart from possible environmental damage and health hazards, he added.

The activist said the campaign would inform Phetchaburi residents of the possible dangers from these types of projects, while collecting signatures against such projects.

Well intended gesture and a total waste of effort. The clowns in charge will only listen when they are directly affected. Dump garbage on their doorsteps if you want action. Otherwise, you are just wearing out a lot of shoewear and enthusiasm for nothing.
