BANGKOK, 8th November 2017 (NNT) -The Ministry of Public Health is determined to make 1,000 secondary schools across Thailand alcohol-free zones to discourage new drinkers.

Deputy Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Public Health Dr. Supakit Sirilak instructed public health officials around Thailand via a video conference on Wednesday to prevent youth from developing an alcohol addiction.

The meeting was aimed at reducing alcohol-related accidents on the road ahead of the New Year Festival. Driving under the influence is a major cause of road trauma in Thailand, he said.

According to the National Statistical Office, more than 6.9 million people aged 15 and above consumed alcohol last year, accounting for 28% of all people who drank in 2017.

Up to 152,300 young people between 15-19 years of age were found to be drinking last year. They accounted for 13.6% of the total number of teenagers in Thailand.

Given the rising number of young drinkers, the Ministry of Public Health will transform 1,068 secondary schools into alcohol-free zones and urge those suffering from alcoholism to go to a rehab center.

weren't they already? no sales of alcohol near temples and schools? idiotic

Yes, wasn't that about fifteen years ago under Thaksin? No sales within 50 (or was it 100?) metres of either.

Well look at that, it's not life imitating art - it's the present government imitating their nemesis.

Alcohol in schools is not the issue, they also need to be perverts and molestations and bullying free, wouldn't hurt to have those mobile phones left home to kids can concentrate on studying and not phone gazing all day...

Like us lot on TV?

Time and again the Thai reaction to any of these sort of problems seems to be repression , restriction and prohibition, isn't it abut time they started to treat citizens with respect and educate them on how to deal with these sorts of things?

I like your interactive approach, kwilco, but how would you educate citizens to deal with booze in school . . . other than having a laughing policeman at the gate?

So they can't drink at school but as soon as they get home half the family will be tucking into a couple of bottles of lao kao, granddad will be blind drunk and asleep in his hammock and older brother will be planning a heavy night out drinking Chang and street racing. I think the schools are fighting a losing battle on this front, lol.

So that means 72% of people who drank are 14 and under.

I think whoever wrote that needs to be in an alcohol free zone for a while.

Every controversial thread has a newbie who is completely unaware of how 'un-original' their 'go home if you don't like it' really is...

Yeah...the apologists get a little boring as can't handle any comments unless it's silly positive. When you reverse things they say here to where they come from then they are such total hypocrites.
