NLA Sports Committee explains legislation restricting children under 12 from boxing

BANGKOK, 16 November 2018, (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly’s (NLA) Education and Sports Committee has responded to opposition against new legislation that would bar children under 12 years of age from boxing by clarifying that the law would not restrict children from engaging in the support but would impose a more systematic safety system.

Education and Sports Committee Chairman Tuang Antachai and committee member Gen Adulyadech Intapong announced progress in the deliberating of a revised Boxing Act, saying it has gone to the Cabinet and will likely be returned to the NLA on November 18 for further revision. They affirmed that the intention of the law would be to elevate Thai boxing and incorporate more science into its practice.

They assured that the act would not bar children from boxing or restrict boxing as a sport but would rather impose a more systematic approach to training, which would ensure safety for child boxers. They explained that such rules would help the sport develop and be accepted internationally, noting the child labor connotations and possible human rights violations of unregulated child boxing.

Deputy Prime Minster Gen Prawit Wongsuwan acknowledged views for and against the act, assuring it would be thoroughly considered.
