An elderly woman returning from a funeral was killed on Wednesday when her car was hit by a Royal Irrigation Department truck that also hit two other pickup trucks, injuring four other people.

Police said the accident happened at 8.30pm on the Nang Rong-Lam Plaimart Road in Ban Nong Prik village in Tambon Nang Rong of Buri Ram's Nang Rong district.

Police said Rampian Sosai, 64, who was a passenger in the back seat of the car, was severely injured and died later at the district hospital.

Her relatives said she was returning home from a funeral and she was just a few kilometres away from her house when the accident happened.

Police said the six-wheel truck, driven by Thool Tongjai, 50, also hit two other pickup trucks.

Thool, a temporary employee of the Royal Irrigation Department, who was detained after the accident for questioning, said he lost control of his truck and hit the car and then two pickup trucks. He said he did not know what went wrong with the truck.

I bet that wreck will go into a backstreet workshop and rebuilt for sale. That is why you must be very wary when buying a secondhand vehicle in Thailand. Once I saw a Nissan pick-up fitted with a Toyota engine! RIP lady.

The truck that hit that car must have been moving! That car looks like it came out of a crusher.

Speeding is beyond question. Drugs and/or alcohol are other possible, if not likely culprits. I'm amazed the guy didn't run away. To me this suggests two possibilities: 1) he wasn't drunk or on drugs or (2) he was too wasted to run away!
