A 55-year-old village defence volunteer, who was arrested on Saturday morning for allegedly shooting dead a 48-year-old widow, reportedly committed suicide in Kalasin province.

He is suspected to have hanged himself in the detention cell at Muang Kalasin Police Station, the precinct’s deputy superintendent Pol Lt-Colonel Suthep Phukanha, said on Sunday.

The body of murder suspect, Thongkham Phutatdok, was found at around 7am on Sunday. He was found hanging from a blanket in a corner that eluded visibility to the three security cameras.

A committee comprising police, provincial public prosecutors, administrative officials and a doctor conducted a joint autopsy of Thongkham’s body to determine the cause of his death. Relatives had not doubts that he had committed suicide and collected the body for religious rites, Suthep said.

Thongkham was arrested on Saturday morning at a forest near Wang Bua Ban pond in Tambon Bua Ban of Yang Talad district following a four-hour standoff with police. During the standoff, he threatened to shoot himself if police tried to arrest him. But police successfully tackled and apprehended him.

Thongkham had fled to that forest after allegedly shooting dead widow Suksan Thansawai at her home in Tambon Huai Pho. He claimed to have had a secret romantic relationship with her for years and reportedly killed her out of jealousy.

Not that the police monitoring the cameras would have been awake anyway.

However, if he did commit the crime, his subsequent death is no great loss to society.

Why does it take a committee of police, public prosecutor, administrative officials and a doctor to conduct the autopsy??

No privacy for the deceased, but a photo opportunity perhaps..
