The server is so antiquated for the job of supplying content and advertising @jonathan-fairfield that it is falling down very often.

most users are willing to accept a degree of adverts as long as the site is fast. So it seems that the revenue stream is more important than the users

 

Continue in this business model and there will be no revenue stream to worry about as you will have chased away the users

Could it be a hidden virus ?   Just pure speculations of course.

the server could be infected, its been ongoing for the last few weeks so one would hope that it's somebody's job to check

Not a problem with the servers. It is a problem with the forum software.
