These sorts of incidents are almost unheard of in Thailand. They are the daily standard in the United States which has draconian laws and heavy policing. All the insane laws in America don’t seem to be doing much good in this regard. Murder rates in the US have never been higher.

More and effective law enforcement is not the solution. This is all just the inevitability of capitalism and unfortunately the American way is slowly taking over Thailand. There is no answer for Godless culture where feelings of greed, envy, jealousy, and hatred begin to take over the human spirit. This is what capitalism does, it drives people over the edge. It’s not drugs, it’s not guns, it’s not lack of effective policing. It’s capitalism.

Thailand has remarkably low levels of violent crime given its poverty levels and I’ve always contributed that to Buddhism. But the almighty dollar is a powerful thing and has a way of promoting a Godless culture where people no longer fear things like Karma and the afterlife. Their God becomes money and when that happens, you get a lot more violent crime.

another expat/tourist who has no idea what they are talking about because they have never seen crime so thailand must be crime free right?  just because thailand is buddhist it does not relfect the socitety or crimes, like all muslim countries is dangerous with tons of murder which is not true.

Murder rate.

Thailand = 4,000 - 4,500 murders = 5.88 - 6.61 murders per 100,000 people.

USA = 17,250 murders = 5.3 murders per 100,000 people.

gun murder rate.

Thailand = 4.45 gun murders per 100,000 people.

USA = 3.85 gun murders per 100,000 people.

I was looking at some similar, but more recent, international stats earlier today because of all this.

Basically, the U.S. has by far the highest gun ownership per capita of any country -- amazingly, more guns than population, according to the stats. And it has one of the highest gun homicide rates among developed countries. But interesting, the U.S. overall all homicides average is actually a bit below the world average, because, there are a lot of countries out there with much higher rates -- Mexico, Philippines, much of Central and South America, and elsewhere.

Thailand, by comparison, is quite a bit lower than the U.S. per capita murder rate (3+ vs 5+ per 100,000 for the U.S.), but also far far above the non gun-crazed countries in places such a Europe and developed Asia where gun possession rates are low and gun homicide rates per capita are likewise very low, as in, often less than 1.5 per 100,000 population.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

(Thailand is listed in the above chart)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

(Thailand is NOT listed in this chart, for some reason)

murder rate and stats in thailand is not reliable, according to thailand it had 2,229 murders in 2016.

but according to research by the University of Washington.

In 2016, there were more than 3,000 homicides by a firearm in the country - a rate of 4.45 deaths per 100,000 people.

and also  while murderers took 3,000-3,800 lives yearlySomrak Chuwanichwong, president of the Thai Familylink Association and psychiatrist at Srithanya mental hospital, said on Wednesday.

I'm not a sexpat, not un-integrated into Thai society, and certainly not bitter.

But I do follow and read the news every day, and by doing so, get to observe a near daily litany of news reports with some variation of "jealous/drunk/drugged up Thai man kills his GF/wife/family/relations, etc etc."

Sorry, but I'm going to continue to "slag off" murderers no matter who or where they are. Thailand is literally drowning in domestic violence/murders, and ignoring or trying to downplay them only means more will be forthcoming.

And here's today's latest installment to add to the pile of misery:

also a  murder case in songkhla, woman sprayed down with m16. jealous man found out she had kids and man, so he got jealous for not getting her.

Ya, I cited the Univ of Washington data provided by Reuters earlier in this thread. And I have no doubt that Thailand probably has under-reporting of various of these kinds of data. And AFAICT doesn't really clearly or accurately track domestic violence cases as such (murders or otherwise) at all.

An interesting insight into the Thai viewpoint. I particularly noticed their idea on how to reform illegal homemade gun makers -

"Earlier this year, an initiative was launched to give gun offenders three weeks of specialist weapon-making training - overseen by the government and the Royal Thai Army, with the aim of reducing the rates of released inmates re-offending."

If only I could have been at the planning meeting that came up with this idea. I would have thought some training that might help them choose a different career path would have been better but at least they should make better guns that are safer to use when killing people.

simple answer - YES. just like many others are fully kitted-up 24 / 7.

Why would any sane person go to a party where they feel they are made safer by carrying a killing machine?

The survivor, who acted dead by lying still on the floor after hit in the stomach, told the story which my wife explained to me.

The mother in law was bullying her son in law for a long time, she didn't liked her and every time has a big mouth to him. We don't know if she was sick in her head or really had a bad son in law. But he did warned her, if she opens her bad mouth again to him, he will kill her and her family, so that just happened that night. It turned the man blind from anger (really what's going on on this.. happening more and more) and shoots everyone.

So you are blaming the mother in law?

I don't think it's mental illness, just the attitude of many thai males. I've had some threaten to shoot me for beeping my car horn.

interesting how the "survivor" took a 9mm slug in the stomach and is up and walking around, did anyone actually check the wound, remove the bullet etc. ….

My wife's family does not like me. I cannot handle that. Any sort of rejection just sets me off. Everyone has to love me, or else I cannot handle the situation. I have no self esteem, and when any outside factor makes me feel like less of a man than I already am, I just lose it. This time, granted I went over the top. Sorry if I hurt anyone. Oh, wait a minute, I killed off my whole family? And myself? I did not realize it was that bad, as I was outside of myself, and now I guess I am dead too.

Too bad they did not realize what a loon this guy was, in advance, so he could have been institutionalized. Oh that is right, they really do not consider mental illness to be a disease here, do they? I feel bad for this family, as they did not deserve this. His mother and father are the people to be held responsible for this, for not being functional parents. And Thai society to some extent for making this half man feel somehow special, when in reality he was nothing at all, just a mass murderer. A man is supposed to protect his children, not murder them. What can one say?

The number of unhinged people walking around out there who have access to firearms is quite frightening.

What a tragedy, two young kids killed for absolutely nothing at all. Heart-wrenching stuff. RIP to all the innocent victims, and may the murdering scum rot in hell.

Blowing your born is a cultural faux pas. Did you not read the guide book before coming here?

I guess you don't have many Thai friends if you think they are aggressive. Try living in Glasgow or Detroit.

So many these Thai males have zero control, make em angry and its a murderous rage. All you can do is warn people...don't go to Thailand, if you do give the males a wide berth, don't try to interact with them. Don't ever ever try to be funny and crack a joke...that's like playing with a hand grenade.

This happens on an almost daily basis in the US. Don't blame Thailand.

True but I have never felt the need to carry a gun, in any of the more than 30 countries I have been to, to make me feel safer. If someone wants to shoot you they will do it long before you have a chance to shoot them so not much point having one anyway. Reading body language, showing respect, knowing when to back down and how to act submissively are far better means of self preservation in almost every situation. In a country I am gagged from mentioning, you are more likely to die if you have access to a gun than if you don't. If I was caught up in a mass shooting like this one then a gun would be a great advantage, unless the shooter knew that I carried a gun, in which case, I would be his first victim.

And now we have another domestic violence/murder winner candidate -- latest one, guy strangles his mother in law to death, then plans to go kill his wife and her new BF (but gets arrested before he can catch them) and then finally plans to kill himself. Ended up being one dead, could easily have been four instead.
