Police said the suspect, Sucheep Sornsung, became angry because he did not feel welcomed by his wife’s family.

some of us may have same problem with in-laws but we don't go out a start shooting our own kids

I can see the gun nuts lining up - if another member of the family had had a gun, the tragedy would have been prevented.

Probably not as even the people in this 3rdish world country have more common sense then the idiots in the country you are referring too.

Yes

No big deal.

This will be forgotten about by next week like so many other horrific events before it (events that would resonate in the phyche of society for many years in a normal country).

Ohhh Neva Mine....Mai Pen Rai and all that.

Well I carried a gun for well over 40 years and none of my ex wives ever shot me, so maybe it had a deterrent effect. ????

So many these Thai males have zero control, make em angry and its a murderous rage. All you can do is warn people...don't go to Thailand, if you do give the males a wide berth, don't try to interact with them. Don't ever ever try to be funny and crack a joke...that's like playing with a hand grenade.
yes! They don’t do,taking the piss, having a laugh or pulling your leg! Irrational to the hilt

Did you ever carry your gun when you were drunk?

Nope. Never. If I was going out drinking, no gun on person.

Now in Alaska, there was always one to two guns in the car. So I never drank beyond walking distance of home.

Out in the field, around the fire at night, there were a few times that I overindulged while still wearing my 44. Thats becasue its dark and if you have to go piss, you could run into a bear. So I tried not to get falling down, just tipsy

Absolutely horrific. It's bad enough that people get so desperate that they turn to actions like this, but absolutely heart wrenching that young kids are the innocent victims.

What a terrible, terrible tragedy

"Desperate" about what?

Another tragic instance of someone who would seem to have had mental health issues.
The government needs to invest in providing support to vulnerable people, so we can slow this almost daily reporting of someone doing a vicious act because of a deranged mental state. There are too many unbalanced people here grabbing guns or knives seeking revenge for the most trivial of matters. Road rage, feeling disrespected, marital issues, grab a weapon and let's get even.

Who knows it could eventually be safe to live here.

"Mental issues", "vulnerable people", "deranged mental state". What's with the psychiatry assumptions as to cause?

Strange that this is this being reported in UK paper's an only picked up by

pattaya news here

https://thepattayanews.com/2019/01/01/new-years-eve-mass-shooting-ends-in-seven-deaths-including-suspect-in-southern-thailand/

I was going to ask the same question -- why are we reading articles on this from two different UK media outlets of all places (when there's no apparent UK connection to the incident whatsoever), and nothing here from the usual ThaiVisa local news sources?

PS -- The BKK Post website has an article on this one that seems to be pulling info from both Reuters and AFP. The BKK Post article says the guy's wife survived, and that he had a drug-related criminal record, was very drunk at the time of the shooting, but no history of violence against family members.

PPS - The Nation does have an article on this on their website as well:

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/around_thailand/30361428

However, The Nation article has 180 degree opposite info from the BKK Post article, as follows (Note the final sentence quoted below...):

Quote

Deputy provincial governor Somporn Patchimphetch, who inspected the scene at 1.30am told reporters that the murders appeared to have been committed in a fit of rage. He added that Sucheep - who was married to the family’s other daughter Boonnyanuch Sornsang, 37, was resentful at the family’s alleged hostility towards him. Boonnyanuch was not present at the party."

Somporn said Sucheep was released in November from the Nakhon Si Thammarat Prison where he had been jailed for three years for attempted murder. It was reported that he was unemployed, often drunk and had on many occasions threatened to kill the family.

Here's a link to the Reuters article, which ends with the following gun info for Thailand:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-new-year-thailand-idUSKCN1OV1EZ

Quote

According to 2016 data from the University of Washington, Thailand had the highest reported rate of gun-related deaths out of 10 countries in Asia. It was about 50 percent higher than the Philippines, which was second on the list.

According to Thailand’s Interior Ministry, there are more than 6 million registered firearms in the country of 69 million people. But there are also many unregistered guns in circulation.
