PHUKET: A leopard cat from the wilds of Phuket is receiving care at the Soi Dog Foundation animal shelter after being struck by a vehicle in Mai Khao yesterday (Jan 1).

Anupong pledges better road safety measures

The number of road fatalities is lower so far during this year’s New Year holidays, but drunk driving and speeding remain the key contributing factors in crashes, accounting for most of the arrests made, Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda told reporters at Government House on Wednesday.

Two more dead in Phuket. Day Six “seven days of danger” – Toll reaches 6

According to statistics issued by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Phuket Office, the island registered 18 accidents, 16 injuries and two deaths on Day Six (January 1) of the annual road safety campaign.

Hot : Events to watch on January 2

The first working day of 2019 will be full of interesting events that are well worth watching.

 

1 The government is expected to announce details of the three-day coronation ceremony set for early May. The announcement came after HRH King Maha Vajiralongkorn issued a command for the coronation day to be held on May 4.

 

2 The Election Commission will meet at 2pm and is expected to clarify the date for the election, which is expected to take place in February. Recent rumours have claimed that the election might be postponed.

 

The EC is expected to submit the list of 200 senators to the National Council for Peace and Order that has Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as its chief.

 

3 The Cabinet meets today instead of its regular Tuesday meeting. 

 

4 The Cabinet might confirm its mobile cabinet meeting, which is expected to be held in Chiang Mai, the stronghold of the Shinawatras.

Phuket heavy rain warning for the weekend

PHUKET: Phuket and other provinces along the Andaman Coast have been issued a weather warning, with torrential downpours and waves reaching up to three metres high forecast from tomorrow (Jan 3) through Saturday (Jan 5) with up to 70% of the island expected to be hit with heavy rain.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's monetary policy committee expects any future policy tightening would be gradual after the central bank's first rate hike since 2011 in December, minutes from its last policy meeting showed on Wednesday.

Is it fair to tag someone a Cheap Charlie?

If you are new to Thailand let me explain the term ‘Cheap Charlie’. It is used by Thais to describe someone, usually foreign, who is perceived as tight or cheap when it comes to spending their money. In fact the Thai term is a lot more crude ‘Kee Neo’ – which directly translates as ‘Sticky Shit’.
