Ferry Tragedy In Myanmar

Featured Replies

I would be careless not to post this, as there has been some interest of late by a few members wanting to travel from the border at Ranong-Kawthoung up to Yangon in Myanmar.

The intercoastal ferry which runs the route from Kawthoung (Victoria Point) up to Myeik, sank in bad seas on Saturday killing several hundred people, with just a handful of survivors.

So please think carefully about alternate travel through this area during monsoon season, as it has been one of the worst starts to the season I have ever seen.

SVB, I hadn't heard anything locally, when you say 'several hundred' dead do you actually mean 700, that's a lot of people. :o

There was a ferry disaster in Bangladesh this past weekend but I haven't heard any similar reports regardnig Myanmar.

Somewhere between 300 and 350 dead, perhaps less than a dozen survivors.

You won't hear about it in any press, this is Myanmar we're talking about. Bangladesh ferry tragedies hit international news, but not Burmese ferries in the Mergui archipelago.

Happened about 10 or so miles south of the main pearl farm, and about 5 miles NE of Sinn Kyunn from the details I have so far from the farm.

I'll post any more info as it comes to hand.
