A drug suspect was killed in a shootout with Army troops while attempting to smuggle 2.8 million methamphetamine pills into Thailand from Myanmar late Sunday night.

Troops from the Pha Muang Taskforce were patrolling a border road in Chiang Rai’s Chiang Saen district when they spotted a pickup truck at about 10.40pm.

The troops chased after the pickup as it sped toward the Chiang Saen-Chiang Rai bypass before crashing into the concrete barrier at the u-turn under Yonok Nak Nakhon bridge in Ban Si Suwan village in Tambon Nong Pa Kor next to Doi Luang district.

Two men exited the vehicle and opened fire, resulting in a five-minute gunfight.

Polawat Lungsikaew, 23, a resident of Kanchanaburi, was killed but the other suspect disappeared.

The troops found 19 bags with about 2.85 million meth pills in the back of the pickup.

Its good to stop the drugs coming into Thailand but even more important to stop the money going out as this will hurt them much more than the loss of a small percent of drugs being stopped .

You're absolutely right in 'stop the money' effectiveness, unfortunately this will never be accomplished by law enforcement. If the Americans are failing so miserably in stopping drugs and trafficking with all that power and money, how can Thailand hope to make a difference? Just replace Mexico with China in the equation and there lies the futility.

Legalize drugs, sell them in a pharmacy, tax them, problem solved.
