What Did Farangs Do Before 'the Mobile Phone?

Featured Replies

I could live without it until I got my last phone - Sony W810i - it has everything I need: MP3 and internet. Once I figure out how to surf TV properly on it I will burn my computer!!

In 'this day and age' we just can't do without our mobile phones. As the technology advances we use them more and more. The first mobiles were just for talking. Now we can use them as our personal organiser, take photos, surf the web etc. Who knows what comes next. Love them or hate them, we can't get away from them.

ps My personal dislike is that people just can't get away from them. I my gym, there's always someone in the middle of their workout answering their phone and shouting "Yeah, I'm in the gym..."

Can we not leave them switched off for even an hour or two???

ps A friend of mine old me that her BF actually answered a call in the middle of Nookie! What's that about?!?

Agreed, I don't take my to the gym - it might damaged through my sweaty paws!

Ever get a business card from someone who has an office number, mobile number, pager number, message service, etc, etc?

Just seems needy to me. :o

There comes a point where you become a slave to the technology and fearful of being out of contact.

Fishing solves this.* :D

* Out of cellphone range without a sat phone.

It was the other way around for me. I was right in the heat of things when her mobile started ringing. She insisted she had to answer it right then and there. Needless to say, I was a little put off by it.

Not sure which is more annoying though, cells phones now or those laser pointers the girls used to use a couple years ago. Trying to have a drink at a bar and constantly being flashed by lasers wasn't quite as enjoyable as it may seem ! Glad they stopped that (once the girls realised they had to buy new batteries for their pointers, the fad died out real quick !)

A truly dedicated heavy breather :o

During my working life, I used to take one call and miss three. I had to have the thing on constant charge in the car.... do I miss that? not a bit.

I currently have the cheapest mobile that you can get.... but I have a very expensive digital camera, the CD player in the car will play MP3s, and a Mac.... right tools for the right job.

Wish I'd bought a Mac...Don't need a cell right now, and I have no extras on my land line. If I'm not home, I'm not reachable. E-mail works for me. Stone Age rules. Else I'd be out with CV salmon fishing all day.

Isn't it interesting how we say things like 'Stone Age rules' in the same paragraph that we say 'wish I'd bought a Mac' and 'Email works for me'! Yeah, Stone Age rules, okay!!! :o

Ps Found Cdnvic's comment "Just seems needy to me." At the end of their long list you expect to see 'Carrier Pigeon', very funny...

Before the mobile phone social life was organised via land lines. Once out in a group there was nothing to do but drink, chat, ogle/chat up the goirls, drink, play pool, listen to the juke box, drink. Life was simple, often times a bit p1ssed, but simple. :o

Now you see groups of people out together all busy on their mobiles texting god knows who, they never actually seem to talk. The one that really gets me is when I see a guy taking his girl out for a meal. They've barely sat down and she's texting someone.

Unfortunately, like the PC/Laptop, they are getting almost essential certainly for business.

Years ago on business trips in Europe, my partner either rushed for a local post office to telephone or, when that was closed for lunch, produced some 2 kilos of coins and looked for the nearest public phone. :o

I was enjoying a fabulous cell phone free existence until my Thai wife had to have one....."because all the farang have one"

She's keepin' up with the Joneses!!

Well, mine has been cut off (have a few pending bills) and I actually don't miss it. It is sitting on the table and I charge it ocassionally. People know that it is not working and call me on my land line which has an answering machine, or e-mail me.
