Wifey's been out of Thailand for a while - only brief visits to the motherland ones in a while. She enters Thailand with with a a foreign passport. Her Thai passport she hasn't used in over 20+ years. It expired many moons ago. Don't even know where it is.

Now we're thinking about getting another one to avoid visa hassles. I know she could get a 1 year visa extension for 1900, but its still a hassle compared to no hassle at all. Besides, i hear the Thai passport is only 50 bht (is that true?).

Anyway, question is...will there be any downside to getting and using the Thai passport to enter Thailand? What kind of downside, i have no clue. Just don't want to be smacked in the face with something that we hadn't foreseen. Also, being in Thailand as a Thai citizen vs a citizen of a so called first world...anything there? You know, in case of emergency or what not.

Thoughts?

Unless she's planning to stay longer than 30 days there is no advantage in using a Thai passport.

The downside is having to swap passports when entering Farangland and Thailand. When leaving Farangland she would use her Farangland passport to clear passport control, but check-in to the flight using the Thai passport. When arriving in Thailand she would present her Thai passport to passport control. When leaving Thailand she would check in to the flight using the Farangland passport and clear passport control using the Thai passport. Then present the Farangland passport when re-entering Farangland.

If you can find the expired passport it could be used to enter (only) Thailand even though it's expired.

One advantage is she can use the Thai immigration queue when she enters the country, and there is a reasonable chance you can use the same queue with her if you are married. The Thai queue is normally small as most Thai people use the auto gates when entering the country. That might be useful to you, or it might not matter at all.

There is no downside. A passport costs 1,000 baht plus the EMS postage cost if you prefer to have it posted to you. The passport lasts 5 years.

Price for a thai passport is around 1000THB.

Plus obtaining / renewing a Thai passport is nowadays very easy and quick.

But if she can't produce the old expired passport that might slow the process down a bit but not insurmountable.

Does she have proof of her Thai nationality such as a ID card or house book or birth certificate?

She could go to the Thai embassy where she is at and obtain a certificate of identity that would allow her to enter the country as a Thai. Then get a new passport here.

Oh really? She does have a valid Thai ID.

So if she were to enter Thailand on this Thai embassy issued certificate of identity, would it be obligatory for her to get a the Thai passport in Thailand? What if she didn't get it? What document does she use at immigration exiting?

If she got a CI from the embassy and used it enter she would have to get a Thai passport to leave the country. If she had enough time (about 4 weeks) she could get a new passport for traveling as well.

I will be easy for her to get a new passport here. There are offices to apply for it at in  all regions in the country and it normally takes less than a week new one that is sent to her by express mail.

I might have got something wrong but what's the problem?

She can go to Thailand on her foreign passport with VOE. As soon as she stays there get a Thai-pp (my gf had it within 10 days here in Pattaya) and the leave the country on her foreign pp.

Next visit with the Thai pp and everything's fine.

No problem just a suggestion on the best way to it.

Also we do not know what passport she will be using for entry.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing but then the point of all this is not to be subjugated by visa policies. So coming in on the certificate would technically be similar to coming in with Thai passport, for all intents and purposes.

Wrong typing, sorry. Should have been VOA (visa on arrival)

She may not qualify for a 15 day visa on arrival after applying for it. A VOA is only available for those from 21 countries.

She may qualify for a 30 day visa exempt entry.

That would be even better, giving her more time to get the Thai pp

I have never noticed that the old passport has to be returned.

It's expired and can not be extended.

One advantage of using the Thai passport regardless of length of stay is the ability to use the electronic gate at passport control.

That's exactly what me and the wife do. She can also use her pp at the electronic gates in Oz

Some Thai passport offices can even make a passport same day for a relative modest official surcharge (I think its 1,000 baht) if you show up early...????

But if it holds valid visas you want it returned so they can be used.

That would surely be the easiest way. No need to go to the embassy. Getting a passport is very easy in Thailand. If you need a police report that the old passport is lost, that is also very easy- just a few minutes and 20 baht in any cop shop. If you have the number of the old one, I would do that just in case or call the passport office first to see if necessary. If the police ask where and when it was lost, you say you lost it just now in that police district so as not to let them send you to another police station.

Most important thing is, as mentioned above, to leave on the same passport she entered on, as Immigration needs to match the exits with the entries and not allowing this to happen will cause grief to them and the passenger rushing to make their flight plus the unfortunates in the queue behind.
