Have you had sex yet today ?

For a guy who does not like old guys to talk about sex why would you ask?  Which is it?  Do you like old guys to talk about sex or not?  If no why would you ask me to talk about sex?  Do you want pictures too?

Ones that stay off the booze, keep away from relationships with the locals and generally keep life focused on their job.

It's about.. "all work and no play" then.

Interesting theory, but some may question is that really living...or merely existing?

Add this advice to the top of the list of the rest will be ok even on a bad day.  Why?  Your liver will save your life, because you didn't destroy it with booze plus you will be cash positive...here again, cash positive = NOT funding local sin sot/relationships...your work will help keep you cash positive (again) and sanity in check!  Cash is KING! WHY?  Cash = OPTIONS

I haven't particularly thrived here, nor have I succumbed; just treading water, really. But some guys do seem to find their niche. What do you think are the qualities that make a Western guy (or gal) do better here than they would in their home country?

Depends what you mean by 'thrive'.   Care to expand on your question?

People who don't think of it as different from their home country, why is it different?  This is where you live so act like it.

In terms of business :-

Network - the more people you know the more opportunities you'll have.

Guys who are entrepreneurial and have past experience starting businesses can do well here, but you hear mostly about guys with zero previous experience putting money into things they have no idea about and then failing.

Don't get into business with or for an uneducated Thai, if they aren't very knowledgeable about all aspects of business then don't start a business with them or for them.

For a guy with his nom de plume, he does sound confused fairly often.

Pictures? Yes please. No fuglies.

If you are coming to thailand as a last resort due to lack of finances you will struggle big time

You sum things up perfectly... too many loosers come to thailand, because they have failed at home, one way or another.. they then cry about how cruel thai immigration is being to them, or how they got ripped off by a thai lady...  grow up guys...most of you have had many many years to prepare for retirement...

Shit hit the fan has been threatened for decades , always around the corner, coming tomorrow except it actually never does.

Maybe it will next month, everybody should have bag packed ready to run ????

Sh*t has already hit the fan, it's just that it has hit it slowly over time, so it's difficult to notice.

Look back 10 years ago, was it as ridiculous as it is now?

Who survives best? The person who does not export his or her culture to Thailand. The person who does not exhibit the facade that the west is the best, our way must be better because we have the technology, the laws, etc.  The person who survives tries to make a new life in Thailand and does not try to carry on with his old life here.

I have worked here in Thailand with many foreigners who were very qualified, but they were not suitable for working in a culture different from their own.

Understand that Thailand is not a country of refuge, and some rights are reserved for Thai citizens. Don't say that is not fair; it was like that before you came and if you didn't know that, don't blame anyone but yourself. Finally, don't get your daily exercise from jumping to conclusions. Avoid at all costs - foreigners whose favorite pastime is sitting at a bar or cafe and complaing about Thai people and Thai culture.

Wow, what a complicated bunch of people we have here. There is no mystery, inner-self seeking etc. etc. for me. I am PR in Sing and HK but would rather take the rental income thanks very much. Wife is Indonesia but couldn't live there for a hundred good reasons starting with traffic. Financial very independent, and we both like Thailand and can suffer the other stuff with a smile. So pure choice - not trying to make the money eek out, running away from anything, failing to fit back home etc. No mystery....just what works for us. Talk about over-engineering things. Bet I am not alone!

As Canthai55 said. Wherever you are in the world you can thrive. I thrive by keeping busy: biking three hours a day, shopping, gardening, some housework and cooking, watching tennis and football, reading and writing, planning and going on some trips around Thailand, going out for dinner or lunch or just a nice coffee. Relaxing with breakfast watching the fish in the pool doing the same.

It's a grand life if you don't weaken!!

You  certainly would now, but there was a time not so long ago when you wouldn't, depending on your lifestyle.

Depends?  Are you writing a thesis or tired of starfish?

Very droll. When someone says I'm wrong, I like to see proof. Excuse me if I don't just take your word for it, I'm  not that trusting.

Starfish is OK as part of a number of variations.

You're assuming someone who does well here would not do as well in his home country or some other country ??

i would think many people who do well here would do well wherever they chose to live assuming they make a realistic decision to live here and aren't pursuing a fantasy  that only exists in their imagination .

ive lived and worked in 5 countries and felt at home in all but one and even the one that I had some reservations about I coped with for a few years before deciding to move on because it didn't suit me ... I recognized it didn't suit me and didn't spend my time blaming everything on the people and authorities of the country I decided to leave.

Except for my rented companion, for 9 minutes or so including showers, payment and a kiss goodbye

If she charges by the minute then you are doing ok, if she charges by the hour then you have got 51 minutes spare to contemplate how expensive she was.

If you were in Thailand in 1984 and look at it in 2019, you would realize the shit hit the fan years and years ago!

1. You have to know what the lady likes especially what type of man and in what situation.  2.  What movies does she watch and what does she spend her time doing on her phone.  3.  What did she do for entertainment before she met you? 4.  Do you watch or read much Hentai?

You might think that pornography is only popular among men, and if you do, you're sorely mistaken. We could cite research that shows many women watch porn, but all you really need to know is that Oprah Winfrey has porn suggestions for women, and if Oprah gives personal recommendations for anything, you'd dxxx well better be prepared to listen.

I dunno. I've thrived. I have had a lot of friends who have thrived. I think those of us who thrive are the ones who recognize that we are the ignorant ones, who must accept changes to our expectations. It helps if you have enough self confidence to learn the language. My experience is that the only way to learn a language is to need to speak it. That's why it gets harder as you grow older; you don't have as many opportunities to have to use the language. The biggest thing seems to be giving up the idea that you know the right way to do things and accept that you are among people who know how things are supposed to be done. If you insist that only the way things were done "back home" is the "right" way to do things then you'll be wearing woolen clothing from October to May.

Likewise, you would probably find my deadpan expression ( also called prison stare ) quite uncomfortable. i constantly get mistaken for law enforcement, even in Thailand. One of my friends told me I have the personality of a taipan. Still game?

Taipan? You do know "taipan" is a Cantonese word that specifically refers to the manager of a whorehouse, right?

It also refers to the western taipan of Australia, officially the most venomous snake in the world.
