Brits in Thailand in 2018: Fourteen suffer rape or sexual assault and ten suicides

Figures revealed under the UK's Freedom of Information Act reveal that fourteen people suffered rape or sexual assault in Thailand last year. In addition there were a further 18 victims of assault and 25 of theft.

 

Figures about the death of British people in Thailand showed that 10 committed suicide in 2018.

 

But there were also figures related to "Brits Behaving Badly": Twelve people were arrested for assault, 35 for drugs related matters and 11 for theft. 

 

The British Embassy handled 38 missing persons' cases and were called in as 321 people either lost or had their passports stolen.

 

The information was revealed to a Thaivisa member who has asked not to be named.

Thai police would like to investigate some of those assaults, etc but are hot on the trail of perps that did all those suicides.

How about comparing the figures to those of other countries where there are similar numbers of Brit tourists and residents and see how they compare. Surely, you need some kind of baseline to see whether those figures are all that bad.

No. On average 365 Brits die every year in Thailand.. Thats natural deaths inckuded..

Probably persons found dead in their homes or residencies: heart attacks and other illnesses, just like in the UK.  

Of course, the ThaiVisa prophets of paranoia will declare  murder most foul, perpetrated  by scheming spouses in every case.

Surprised passport theft is still  high.Farang passports are pretty much given away . Thai scrutiny and overseas checks are making these stolen  passports worthless. Many have computer chips in them.Almost

So just part of everyday embassy routine.  Dealing with dead citizens paperwork, finances, family and friends and body disposal has got to be one of the most crap jobs in the foreign service.  

A Canadian friend died in Cambodia.  He was next to broke, owed a couple of thousand dollars in hospital bills and had a brother and a couple of kids in Canada who wanted nothing to do with him.  Canada did not have an Embassy there at the time so the Australian Embassy got involved.  They were great, actually.  They really leaned on the family in Canada to at least cover the cost of the funeral which the brother grudgingly  inally did and encouraged his friends to try to raise some funds to cover his debts.  Not a fun job, I would guess.

The value of contraband passports is in their pages with visa stamps on them.  When forgers create passports, they need pages with genuine stamps to make them look authentic.  Brand new passports with no stamps draw attention.

A Pakistani passport forgery gang was busted in Bangkok several years ago.  They had all the official equipment needed to make very authentic looking passports.  They had machines to stitch the pages in and even the ability to insert chips into them.

The cause of death is not put as 'ill'.

 

There would be a medical reason on the death certificate.

One of my former colleagues, a very long time ago, used to maintain that the Swedish Embassy can or will offer assistance to anybody from any country, even if that just means allowing someone to use their telephone.

Add together hospital deaths of 179 and natural deaths of 122.

 

Throw in an arbitrary number from the 158 unknowns and I suspect a high proportion of those will be 'old age'.

 

When an embassy reports 'cause unknown', it generally means a death that was not suspicious but an autopsy was not carried out to determine the specific cause. That generally would apply to those us who 'die in our beds' so to speak.
