Right, JAG. The whole point is that virtually none of the coup leaders (if any) was clapped in irons and forced to languish behind Thai bars for the rest of their life for high treason.

Far from it!

And look what happened (or rather, did not happen) to the coup-happy father of the present great new military leader ....

Enough said!

What is being exiled to a foreign country and dying there? Being shot would have been less of a punishment.  Ask Napoleon.  The master of the coup was arrested a number of times and clapped into irons and charged with war crimes and all sorts of other crimes he got away when they bombed his jail.   The guy who could have had everything had one to many coups which was his undoing.  So, no you are not correct.  Most Thai coups have not worked out well.  The military is justifiably afraid of what may happen.

PS Don't mean they are correct, just mean they have much to fear.

IMHO diplomatic channels behind closed doors are as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. The junta will simply ignore their foreign office people. Having diplomats attend the police station in the full glare of international publicity sends a much stronger message.

The junta as martyrs, with all their tanks and guns? Permit me to doubt the average Thai is going to swallow that line.

Not bashing you, just saying your opinion doesn't make much sense.

thank you for your polite contradiction.

I understand your reasoning. But in this case it may be that given the suspicions of tinkering  with what was declared to be an open and honest election which propelled upwards a new political entrant of presumed acceptability to the international spectrum was a more effective diplomatic signal than a behind closed door tut tut. It is obvious this  was an organised presence as a demonstration of genuine interest which  should not be mistaken as actual interference.

Very graciously said. Thank you for your elegant discourse and you also point many pertinent points.

Does rather fit the bill though - if you look at the history that is -eh?

I don't think this is a real good period to be overthrowing democratically elected governments.  Better when the USA had different leadership.  Unless of course you are Russian.

hum.....with all the sad faces I got in my previous posts, I wonder if I still have any friends left here...????...

I love TVF... love you all hiding behind your computers and ranting agains issues that absolutely do not concern us as we are just foreigners here in Thailand, who are either trying to flee and escape someting back in our homelands, or some who cannot afford a decent living back home,  because their beloved homeland leaders who are to busy staging protests in Thailand, and are not fit to give decent pensions and thus made us flee.....really boys....

I would have clapped, bowed, waïed if I had my farang diplomats staging protests against the xenophobic Thai visa rules towards us,  instead of staging grotesque protests in sovereign land on internal politcal issues that are no business of us farangs, foreigners whatever...

Case closed.

One of the greatest privileges of free speech is being able to say you don’t like free speech.

Your response reminds me of the controversal idiom of Voltaire... "I don't agree with what you say, but I will fight to the last breath so that you can say it" - I'm sure that a fine poster like you gets the point, Thank you for your witty response. Happy Songkran.

Sorry, but some of us are also Thai citizens so we do have a horse in the race. And, yes, I am also a farang.

The case is never closed until freedom is attained. I speak for myself and not the "us", a term you so freely used to pepper your overseasoned and overflowing dish of words.

Thai diplomats should have gone to the British embassy when they announced the stopping of the income letters.  Stood in the background and looked somber and shook heads.

You don't have to be a Philadelphia lawyer to figure what all this Junta stuff with Thanathorn is about, muzzle anyone who shows any sign of being a threat, under section 44 he could be charged for being a billionaire, that's the extent of the Junta's power and the Thai people just don't get it.

Humble thanks to all those who reacted to my comments. As I did not want to take up space in reacting individually to each comment, I did it this way,  if anybody or the detractors would so kindly get a chance to read.

My point was not to favour which ever league, either the current powers or the protesters.

Just that there are other places in diplomacy that I cited before, for one nation to mark it's reprobation against another.

None of us here would have appreciated a group of foreign powers with their envoys in our homelands staging a public protest on the streets ?

And on a lighter note and somewhat egoistic touch, the foreign diplomats should have rather gone in front of the immigration HQ to protest against the visa red tape and re established some of their embassy procedures to make life easier for their own nationals in Thailand, immigration wise.

No hard feelings and have a nice weekend ????

I think you miss the point. What do you think would happen if a couple of expats went to the venue instead? They'd probably be out with a swift kick up the backside if you get my meaning. Expats don't have a vote so can do nothing against a regime that seems hell bent...I am sure I don't need to go on. Embassy officials, on the other hand can display a certain amount, perhaps very limited amount, of diplomatic 'disapproval' without being suffering too much. Yes, the Thai officials have complained but that's to be expected but if the Thai government decided to act harshly against any embassy that would be seen as a 'strong arm' statement...and perhaps the writing on the wall for the rest of us. I have been dissatisfied with my embassy performance on a couple of occasions in years past but I think gave they gave the right 'signal' here. As far as expats are concerned it might be seen as 'testing the water' and any reaction might be useful for deciding whether to remain here or relocate.

Who cares..hopefully your embassy would cut of purchases of rice.

You are aware that the country is a geo-political backwater with an oversupply of superannuated generals?

Spookily dressed up as ARVN senior officers circa 1972?

Why doesn't America just invade them and take away their country.

They don't know how to look after their people. Although, if they want a chance of success better take the Brits with them

Countries should be taking sides and letting it be know through their diplomats. I'm happy my native country was present in what was clearly yet another try to force Thailand to suffer under military rule for unforeseeable future.

Slap 'em with heavy duty sanctions, ASAP.

42 C. today.  Big event coming up soon.  Hope some people are bothered by how Thailand is being seen.

A lot to get hot under the collar about.  Orders and threats to control people can not stand against natural needs forever.

Because the Americans can get rice from Vietnam or India. Thailand has nothing else of significant value, other than the girls. And, they can be exported easily.

For years I always thought Thailand's main export was girls, followed by rice.

Obviously, this has touched a nerve with the Thai authorities. Glad to see that the embassies, and the US embassy in particular, are pushing back, not backing down. Would like to see the US diplomatic response to the vague, misguided warning given by the ruling authorities. Carry on.
