Will27
Interesting week of games approaching? Early thoughts anyone? Freo v Richmond Carl v Adelaide Gold Coast v Syd Ess v Geelong Port v Western B GWS v Brissie North V West Coast ST Kilda v hawks Melb V Collingwood You'd be a brave man to tip against Freo at home. I think Essendons best would beat Geelong but Essendon are playing ordinary. Port to win at home. Coll to beat Melbourne. Scott being out for North might tip the scales in their favour A fitty fitty so tipping my boys against the Kanga's.

I'm guessing the reason for Pridham not to ask Eddie about Goodes was it was pre-recorded, watched the episode of 360 that preceded the round table after watching he round table and it all made sense... As for Emperor McGuire, he is full of himself, self inflated by the vast majority of 'members' of the Collingwood football club. You'd be hard pressed to find any 'member' who doesn't see him as the second coming...

I haven't watched the show as yet but saw a grab for it while watching AFL 360. Kochie said to Ed, "why should the GF be played on someone's home ground?" Ed gave the standard, there's been an agreement with the MCG for years. Kochie said "well change it". A bit like when interstate clubs had to play sides from Melbourne who finished below them because of the agreement. Tha AFL managed to change that after continual outcries from non-Victorian clubs. Even when Ed commontates a Victorian club against an interstate club, it's not hard to see who he wants to win. It was a bit like Bomber Thompson barracking for Geelong last week when doing the WC game. Even the commontator said "Bomber, you're not coaching Geelong now".

It was a bit like Bomber Thompson barracking for Geelong last week when doing the WC game. Even the commontator said "Bomber, you're not coaching Geelong now". It was an excellent point and I think a move aimed at possibly moving the grand final to the Adelaide Oval, which whilst 2/3rds the size of the G, it has an atmosphere that I've not experienced at the G... Ed didn't think about his answer, he should have trotted out the "years of tradition will be lost, it won't really be a grand final if it's not at the G"... But he just got defensive... Ed can't help himself, thinks he's that Savior of the AFL... Even had the balls to say that Collingwood was responsible for keeping the Swans in the AFL, Peter Gordon put him in his spot on that one though because he was there... Ed then went onto say that in order for the TV rights to be worth more is if Carlton and Essendon are strong, this was met by a double barrel from both sides in Kochie agreeing with Pridham that both NSW & QLD demand strong representation otherwise the TV rights are worthless. Kochie could have done an Ed and trotted out South Australia this and that, but he's no slouch... Ed just coils up and looks like he's sulking... I really like Kochie and the way he thinks, never mind that half his members are probably more in line with Emperor McGuire, you take that element out of Port and you've got a decent forward thinking club...

BookMan
An article from Wayne Carey... No drinking before games? Football has become a nanny state It would be easy to join the queue of people lining up to take a pot shot at Charlie Dixon and Jack Martin for drinking before a game. But over a couple of drinks? Come on! In banning the pair this week, Gold Coast have highlighted what is both good and bad about our great game in the "professional era". If you're a player, the scales of footy justice rarely tip in your favour. Before everyone gets on their high horse, yes, we all know footballers are well paid, but the fact is football has become too politically correct and it's becoming increasingly difficult for players to find balance in their lives. Being a professional athlete in the AFL now dictates almost every minute of your life. You aren't just trained on how to kick, mark and handball, but you are also drilled about your role as an ambassador for the footy club. That means lessons on dealing with the media, dealing with the public and generally learning how to conduct yourself in a way that your club deems appropriate. You're expected to act like an elder statesman in society. One slip up can cost you dearly. Especially in the world we live in, in which social media virtually traces your every move. But expecting young, maturing men to behave flawlessly is completely unreasonable and I fear that the Suns' decision to tar and feather Dixon and Martin could backfire for all involved. Being a footballer doesn't mean you're different to anyone else in society, yet players are still put on a pedestal. I'm not condoning their behaviour – they may have broken the team rule - but let's put this into perspective. In admitting to his "sin" with Martin, Dixon revealed that he'd actually been having one or two glasses of wine before most games this season. Apparently he said that despite a player-driven pact to abstain from alcohol, those couple of private match-eve drinks had helped improve his on-field performances by enabling him to relax and sleep better the night before. Why punish him for that? It's a safe bet that he's not the only footballer who enjoys a drink in the AFL and if that's what it takes for some players to get a good night's rest, then so be it. I'd be pretty confident a couple of drinks would be far less damaging than the tiredness and fatigue caused by restless nights. And don't even try to link Martin's hamstring injury and Dixon's performance against the Hawks to those couple of drinks they had the night before. It's ridiculous. The underlying issue here is that you can't expect footballers to be robots and for footy to dictate and control their every move. When I was playing it wasn't uncommon to go out drinking after a Friday night game until 3am the next day. You'd have to drag yourself out of bed for a Saturday morning recovery session, but would likely be back on the turps on Saturday night. You had Sunday and the following week to get yourself right for your next match. I'm not for a minute suggesting that's the way forward for today's players. That was then and this is now. But clubs – and the AFL - need to be realistic about their greatest assets and what's common for men of that age. There has to be a middle ground. Just like everyone else in society, footballers need a release. From my experience, and speaking to former and current AFL captains, sustained booze bans certainly aren't the way forward. Instead, clubs just need to trust that players do the best thing for their preparation 99 per cent of the time. Bans and curfews only set players up to fail. It's why I believe that in publicly shaming Dixon and Martin, Gold Coast have been grossly unfair. Why in the world was this matter even made public? Were they hung out to dry just so the club could prove a point about its culture after earlier indiscretions from players? Let's hope not. It feels like we've become the "Nanny State" with footy. This new era of professionalism may be improving the way footy is administered, how players are coached and the way fans engage with their clubs, but it shouldn't be for the sake of the players' lives. It's because of this blinkered "footy's the be-all-and-end-all" mentality that the game loses some players prematurely. Instead, we should be encouraging and trusting players in their preparation around footy and if that means blowing off some steam every now and then, so be it. There's so many ups and downs in footy. Who knows, a bit of trust and enjoyment for the players might just pay off. http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/no-drinking-before-games-football-has-become-a-nanny-state-20150604-ghgvun.html Edited June 5, 2015 by BookMan

Popular Post BookMan
An article from Wayne Carey... No drinking before games? Football has become a nanny state Wise words from Duck methinks. I agree with some of Duck's sentiments about nanny state mentality but i think he has got it wrong in the specific case of the Gold Coast players. Charlie Cameron had already been warned. He used the excuse the first time he was caught that he was drinking with his family (errr...so what? how is that a valid excuse). This time he says a drink allegedly helps him relax before a game. he comes across as quick with excuses but no personal responsibility. The personal responsibility comes down to what the players agreed between themselves: that they wouldn't have any booze for a set amount of time, and the next week a number of players broke the agreement. Then you have a couple of players breaking the team agreement again. Rumour is that it was more far more than just a glass or two, but that isn't relevant in my opinion. The actions demonstrate these players don't have the adequate respect for their team or group, believing the agreement they all made made doesn't apply to them, applying excuses after the fact once caught. If Charlie has a medical reason that only alcohol helps him relax and able to sleep. surely the club would be aware of it? Nah, its c.rap excuses from these blokes. If you want to drink and do your own thing, don't agree with the team to adhere to something and go your own way. Seems to me that Gold Coast have a number of behind the scenes issues with their players and are trying to put a line in the sand .
Popular Post Ron19
Peter Bell was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame on Thursday. Bell among AFL legends ( much more detail inside this link) Peter Bell came from a long way back to make it to the Australian Football Hall of Fame. The odds that he would make it to the AFL in the first place were long. That he would achieve such fame was quite remarkable. Bell was the adopted son of a veterinarian family in Kojonup, a sheep-farming town in the south-west of Western Australia. He was born in Korea. Bell was a footy fanatic from very early, but it wasn't a passion of the family. Freo's first Hall of Fame inductee He was pretty much self-taught until he moved to Aquinas College in Perth as a boarder in year 10. But there were always handicaps. At 175cm he was short for a League footballer even then. These days, you would imagine the talent scouts taking one look at him and swiftly putting a line through his name. He suffered two broken legs as a teen and complications followed. If his mother hadn't intervened, it is likely his injuries would never have healed properly and a career as a professional footballer would have been out of the question. But through sheer determination he made it through the ranks of school football and then WAFL club South Fremantle. And as the star footballer of the Fremantle area, it was only natural that he would join the area's fledgling AFL entry, the Fremantle Dockers. Indeed, he was the first player to put pen to paper for Freo the end of 1994. Bell in WA's football Hall of Fame The problem was that the style of play introduced by Freo's inaugural coach Gerard Neesham didn't suit the burrowing, busy Bell. He played just two games in 1995 and looked destined for the football scrapheap until West Australian media identity Bob Maumill convinced his mate, North Melbourne coach Denis Pagan, to give Bell an opportunity. Bell flew to Melbourne – at his own expense because the Kangas had no cash for such business – to play in an intra-club practice match. Such was Pagan's paranoia that Bell was instructed to introduce himself as Pagan's "little cousin Ricky from Wangaratta". Bell played - if not the best game of his life - then certainly the most fortuitous. He racked up a heap of possessions, and a week later the Kangaroos selected him in the pre-season draft. Even then, he was so unknown that for the first part of his first training session, some of his new teammates thought he was a water boy. But he soon demonstrated he could play and he forged an outstanding career with North, playing in both the 1996 and 1999 premiership teams. He was terrific in the '99 flag decider, with 31 disposals and four goals, and just missed out on the Norm Smith Medal. In 2001 he headed back to Freo, this time as captain, and was part of that club's first finals team in in 2003. He retired in 2008, by which time he was president of the AFL Players’ Association. Bell says now that what drove him to succeed in the AFL were the long odds that he would ever make it in the first place. How many other Hall of Famers were, as Pagan once said of him, "found lying on the side of a road in a Korea"? Said Bell: "Whether you believe in fate or serendipity, to make it from where I started in life and to end up playing football for close to 15 years professionally, was a great motivating force throughout my career."
