Tom Papley fined $500 for staging.

First and only player to be fined for staging this year.

AFL responding direct to Clarko's instructions.
It won't help Pappers get any frees the rest of the season. Despite protestations to the opposite, the Umpires often adjudicate based on like/dislike of players

Callan Ward would surely have to also be fined for staging based on that?
Let's face it, there could be 10 players every week fined for staging

I don't really think it's a like/dislike thing with the umps.

Reckon it's more of a reputational thing.

Like it or not, Papley has a reputation for playing for free kicks whereas

some like Ward doesn't. If it's a 50/50 thing, it usually goes to the player

without the rep.

Toby Greene is a case in point.

Hardly ever get's a free kick unless it's really obvious.

BIg Game yesterday, @sceadugenga would be excited
Richmond and Port in a sensational game, Richmond humbled really and lucky not to be another 30 down on the scoreboard.

A rare 100 metre penalty against Caddy for not getting out of the way of the player after the first 50 , sealed the game for Port in many ways.

Brisbane smashed Port not so long ago and Richmond smashed Brisbane and now Port smashes Richmond
Add in West Coast
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs
Geelong
GWS

Anyone's premiership to win

Yep, it's really open this year. Some clubs won't get the benefit of the

home ground advantage so ladder position might not be a crucial as previous years.

You can put a line through WB and GWS for mine.

Reckon only 6 can win it.

Mick goes bang!

AFL legend Mick Malthouse asks the tough questions of Melbourne after another stuttering season

It’s strange, but I can’t put my finger on exactly what Melbourne stands for.

It’s obvious what the Collingwood Football Club stands for — it’s in direct contrast to what Carlton stands for. One is the blue collar, hardworking, against-all-odds club, and the other is the white collar, upper-class, high-achievers’ club.

Remember these are perceived identities, built on the back of long-ago suburban tradition.

Geelong is the out-of-towner, a club for the western district of Victoria. Hawthorn dominates the east and south-east Melbourne support base.

The poor Saints thought they had the south east, but that’s for another day. The Western Bulldogs are Footscray through and through — they are out west and for the working-class. Essendon controls the north west.

And even North Melbourne, in a small northern area of central Melbourne, has a clear identity as the great Shinboners.

Richmond is the inner-city club built on the hardships of the salt-of-the-earth labourers. As the first club to 100,000 members it is testament to the loyal psyche of its fans.

So where do the Demons fit into all of this? Melbourne had an association with doctors, lawyers and the universities in the 1940s and ’50s, and as long as it was a jolly good game it was enough. It was the nice club.

It had premiership success in the Second World War years and dominated the late 1950s and early ’60s under the late and great Norm Smith with six premierships.

Since the inception of the AFL in 1990, the Demons have made only one Grand Final. Since 2006 they have made the finals just once — in 2018 — when they won two finals, then lost to West Coast by 11 goals in a preliminary final.

A jolly good game is no longer good enough. Their supporters demand more.

Melbourne trains at Gosch’s Paddock and its admin is based between the MCG and AAMI Park. It has had five different coaches and three interim coaches in the past 13 years.

No wonder it lacks an identity.

There are four genuine, very good players at the Demons. Lion-heart Max Gawn is undisputed. Christian Petracca can be as good as the best, if he works hard.

Christian Salem can match it with the better players at any other club. And Clayton Oliver, with effort, can also be excellent.

Nathan Jones has been a warrior, but he has possibly gone on for one year too long.

So perhaps the biggest issue over the past two decades is the Demons’ drafting and recruitment. A look over Melbourne’s draft history is damning.

In 2006 it chose Cale Morton at No. 4 over Lachie Henderson (8), Ben McEvoy (9), Patrick Dangerfield (10), Cyril Rioli (12) and Alex Rance (18).

In 2008 it took Jack Watts with the No. 1 pick. Lovely kid, Jack, but Nic Naitanui went to West Coast at pick No.2. Others that followed in that draft were Stephen Hill (3) to Fremantle, Hamish Hartlett (4) to Port Adelaide, Michael Hurley (5) to Essendon, Jack Ziebell (9) to North Melbourne and Steele Sidebottom (11) to Collingwood.

In 2009, the Demons picked up Tom Scully and Jack Trengove at Nos. 1 and 2 respectively. Nat Fyfe went to Fremantle at 20.

In 2010, Melbourne drafted Lucas Cook (12) and Jeremy Howe (33). Howe is now starring at Collingwood.

In 2012 it took Jimmy Toumpas (4) and Jack Viney (26), and passed on Jake Stringer (5), Jack Macrae (6), Ollie Wines (7), Nick Vlastuin (9) and Brodie Grundy (18).

And in 2013 it gave its first pick to Greater Western Sydney for Dom Tyson. The Giants used that pick to get Josh Kelly.

It’s very easy from the outside and in hindsight to point out what could have been, but there is a murky draft history there, and today’s Melbourne squad doesn’t resemble a top-level list because of it.

Even recently, the recruitment of Jake Lever and Steven May, two similar-type defenders, makes little sense. Why both? Did they go for two defenders hoping that at least one would pay dividends? They certainly paid enough for Lever.

I’m confused then as to what type of player the club is looking to draft and recruit. If I’m confused, the supporters must be disillusioned. And heart broken.

There has been a lot of commentary about Melbourne president Glen Bartlett’s public attack on the team, but I for one think it’s about time someone at Melbourne stood up for the supporters and demanded more. So much more needs to be done. It takes hard work and effort.

Bartlett began his footy career as a player for West Coast before he moved to Melbourne for business. Clearly he is a passionate Demons supporter and his role at the club has become a thankless task.

Melbourne’s game plan failed dismally last year as the Demons won just five games and finished 17th. Yet the style hasn’t changed at all this season on the way to four wins from nine matches. Alan Richardson, as director of coaching, seems to have had very little influence on the game structure, if any at all.

Simon Goodwin is persisting with the system he has in mind for the team, without the personnel to execute it.

I’m not here to put pressure on any coach, but there comes a time when you have to admit that the game style doesn’t cut it and needs adjustment to fit the capabilities of the players.

It is a structure built on rapid ball movement, but when you have a team that lacks the skill to use the football well, the last thing you need is overuse, because you’re just giving the ball back to the opposition.

The Demons fail against quick moving sides because their midfield doesn’t defend or spread fast enough. They fail against big bodied teams because they can’t match it with them. It’s no secret that the sweat on the gym floor at the shared AAMI Park base is from Melbourne Storm players. No secret either, the poor work ethic of many of the Melbourne players.

Gawn is clearly the heart and soul of the whole organisation, but he needs assistance. Tom McDonald looks out of shape and has lost his mobility. Angus Brayshaw, third in the Brownlow Medal count in 2018, has lost as much self-confidence as the match committee has lost faith in him. Jack Viney is tough, but he doesn’t impact the game every week. Sam Weideman tickles the fancy but isn’t consistent.

On Sunday, although the Demons’ opponent, North Melbourne, has been in poor form, it has history and an identity. The Shinboners will always fight for a victory.

Melbourne last held up the premiership cup in 1964, perhaps then, a proud club knew who it was.

Today, supporters and opponents alike wonder when the club will emerge with a strong stance on what it stands for. What is its true essence? Until then, we wait.

Well i dont go for the first half of his rant......lots have over looked talent....If the human hair mop got picked up at 20 then every club didnt think he was a number 1....

Too me he is clearly pointing at the coach....and id go along with what hes saying basically, Lever ummm.......Goodwin came out yesterday and wrapped im up for last weeks game when i thought he pretty much stunk, so them ex Crows are sticking togther, 2 first round picks are beginning to be looking like over kill....still it hasnt helped the Crows....

And yes we dont stand up, Demons have a history of wallowing in the doldrums then poping up for back to back or 3 on the trott flags then slide back into oblivion....

I expect North to roll us today, Gawn and Viney out, it wouldnt have made any differance as the rest of the team are cruising in holiday land, Neal-Bullen hope is contract is up hes supended and we wont see again this year, after a good first year has proven to be a dudd but i blame Simon for that, the guy dont get a run on the ball and hes clearly a midfilerd cum forward, Dropped Lockhart...gess Lever stunk and he drops this guy whos a god dam trier....and Harry gets the flick too......he does need to brush up on his defensive skills.....next year for him....

In comes Charlie Spargo....well so much promise we dont know what were going to get with him tonight.....Mocca magic 2 is back.....just play the kid....hes still a few years away from turning games on its head....Mitch Hannan is in and leave him in after a long period out he is going to be up and down....a smart froward when hes on song, Trent Rivers....the other player the Eagles WILL have there eyes on, promising half back....hope this frees Harms up to play Mid as hes in my fanatsy team...hehehe....and of course Big Tom Mac's back....plz Simon play Tom as the main ruck man thats the best way to run him into some form to up his price in trade terms that the Swans WILL cough up....

North by 40 points is my tip....well 25 at least....

The wizard of Christchurch NZ..... https://edition.cnn.com/2020/08/08/asia/new-zealand-wizard-intl-hnk-dst/index.html  obviously behind last nights pretty good win by the red and dark blue, though North kinda have lost the plot, blown away from around mid second quarter....

Jet Jackson not bad for game ummm 5 or 6 hey WILL? He will be in his prime right around the time Nick Nack is getting ready to hang up his boots......and you thought i was joking about the 5 first round picks.... Jet has that desire, he said he WAS going to play round one....and he did....He needs a new hair style for sure and talking about hair styles WCE number 2....gees reminds me of a skunk or beaver ...the advanced version of Dusty Martin's....Theres a few sporting this rug, thank goodness Clayton Oliver has gone back to the Simply Red style with curl in front...the skunk look didnt suite him for sure...in fact its a blight on most heads...Eagles number 2 looked like he had a dam rug glued to his head....just as well he can play footy.....

Norths 17 i think, the peroxide blonde with dark roots when i first layed eyes on him i thought to myself how much more untidy can you be? he looked awful....horrible dark tatts up the skinny white legs the head was off too but hey he could play footy....

Lets not get carried away hey 5-5 and they haven't beaten anyone just looks ok on Goodwin's resume thats about it....

Anyway the NZ wizard is a pom and had quite a life, is educated and these types sometimes flip at some point...the brain....you know....crackers.....but hes doing something right...after WA uni then Melb uni thought he strange and moved him on wife kicked him out has been shacked up and engaged to a NZ woman for 47 years....dont stop there...she supports him as do the Christchurch City Council to the tune of around $US16,000 a year, must have been when he was in the Canadian Air Force right? The city's offical wizard....imagine WILL and Rip...you could be the local wizards if you put your mind to it we know Thais are super superstitious.....just put a jar of jelly beans in front of one tell them there vitamins and good for your health you will sell truck loads.....

Not even the end of week one......thats Wednesday, i was already in a feverish delima on how i was going to be spending the next 5.5 weeks on friday, the walls begin moving in a round about now, anyway i had the Metabox website page opened in front of me all friday afternoon....looking at which gaming laptop to buy if i decided to buy one..... of course....there a WA co by the way boys and they come with good wraps, well known around the gaming world.....trying to resist decided in the end my mental health was more important than 2550$.....so you know i clicked send.....had too......or i would just die.....well im happy to say i didnt buy there most expensive....that gets put to around 10gees and i think they go further just i didnt look as you know...thats crazy.....16gig of ram 1T ssd card I7 and the money is in the vid card, it was the best in that range of that model.........which means i can add more leagues to FM....football manager, ho and premium service, 3 ys for it....so any issues they pay to ship it back and forth....and yeah i looked around it still came out at 500$ cheaper than some of the known brands for similar specks......The lovely lass i spoke to in Perth on friday recons around 4 to 5 days plus one for delivery....so if im lucky maybe this Friday.......

Melbourne is a ghost town......but we still get people walking around with no masks and further than they should be and not home when there meant to be self isolating....i say charge them with murder if there passing on germs that are known to kill someone....

Meanwhile with the impending delivery of my new machine i been brushing up on getting to know Football Manager, Utube is a wonderful world of knowledge, Fifa stopped making there version around 2014 for pc and i been playing the 3 i owned 2008,10 and 12 for ever, i once did buy a copy of 2015FM but really didnt take to it, sorry i didnt its way more in depth though then they didnt have great graphics for game play as they do now, and how did i get into playing football on pc?

The very first TGF invited me to stay with here up there in Don Mueng, something like that, near the old airport....for 6 weeks.....her brother was in the airforce an officer, she shared his apartment as it was closer for her to go to work, by Thai standards the army looks after there people, never been in anything that big since in Thailand, a 3 bedroom apartment with lifts too all for a bachelor, he spent most of the time at his girl friends place or at the base, use to see him just a couple of times week.....the nice guy left me his desktop to use if i wanted, so how many times can you go shopping n 6 weeks? i went a lot but i still got bored, one day i said to returning beauty queen hey lets go to a mall so i can buy a game for bro's pc...at this time Thailand was still copy heaven so every game in this store was a copy..... basement of a mall....known for pc stuff in the outer northern area of BKK....i picked up a copy of fifa manger 08, knew nothing about soccer apart from just watching and pretty much ended up making my princess a widow....i got hooked like you have no idea....day and night....i racked up the hours....going to bed around 3...waking her up for a cuddle then sleeping like a baby....

When i got home i bought a proper copy as the copy copy would never move past season one and that started 12 ys of this....Anyway the wizard has found an apprentice...another crackpot looking for a free ride courtesy of the council when the chief retires.....what do they do part from walking around looking like make witches? i dont know......

Inter Milan rumour, there after Lional Messi, and there talking something like 400m transfer plus 60m a year wage......not bad for a 33 year old.....they have watched what Ronaldo has brought to Juv, think he may be worth it....finnishing one point behind in second might be a good time to buy up to break the 8 or 9 titles on the trott of Juv and dont forget Juv were banished to the B division for being naughty not that long ago and boy did they come back with a vengeance....

Washington WILL not hurry to find a new name, Will be known as The Washington Football Team this year....sorry im not for this, the whole of europe was invaded raped and taken over and no one there gets peed off ......i say to the natives....grow some balls.....man up.....grow up too....

Well August in recent years has looked like a overcast frozen hell something out off one of them end of the world movies....here in CorVictoria, ive been suitably impressed..... with some sunny arvo's like yesterday was just lovely peering out of my windows....this morning at 10 am sunshine superman and thats a song too is coming through my skillion windows.....lovely.....just lovely...

Eagles stitch up the Blues...was a good game too, they the Blues have come on well..... I think the Eagles are the team to beat this year, wasnt it one year where they began poorly to take the flag?

After last night's performance,i'm calling for Shaw's head.

All his talk of go slow,go fast.

How about starting with a few basic skills.Take a leaf out of the Clarckson model and hit a chest from 20 metres to start.Make all handballs 10 metres or further.

Not rocket science.

No wonder the forward can't function when the rest are running around like chooks(not our chooks on tv)with no heads.

Embarrassed to be a Norf supporter.

Rant over till next week.

Easy FJ

You sound frustrated but It's Shaw's first year and it's a compromised season.

You've also been ravaged by injuries, Cunnington, Taylor garner, Ben Brown, Ziebell,

Ben Jacobs, Tarryn Thomas and Dom Tyson to name a few.

Have to give him some time mate.

Write this year off and use it to develop some kids:smile:

Good to hear from you BTW.

  • Only one interviewed for the job

Yep, they wanted Longmire or Simpson.

When that didn't work out, he was the only man for the job really.

Problem is Norf doesnt have the depth or talent needed and they have had injuries to key players. 5 years they have been trying to sign a big name with no success.

and NOW, the rumour is they want to offload Ben Brown??!!  Can someone explain what is happening there?

Hawthorn probably have their hand out already

????

Tag me when you get back to talking about scantily clad women and post some photos of them

Shaw is a good coach and i reckon he will do okay.

He worked wonders with the NEAFl team in Sydney

Problem is Norf doesnt have the depth or talent needed and they have had injuries to key players. 5 years they have been trying to sign a big name with no success.

and NOW, the rumour is they want to offload Ben Brown??!!  Can someone explain what is happening there?

Hawthorn probably have their hand out already

Ben Brown you say...that WILL work in well when Big Tom Mac and Oscar go to the Swans......think theres more in Brown that the 2 Mac's combined...
