The week that was in Thailand news: Forty years on: Wondering where Thailand (and us!) might be in 2059

we are in a baby ENSO, and yet we already have drought conditions a year ahead of what is predicted to be a much more moderate El Nino next year.  everything we read and observe confirms an acceleration of what we already know based on simple physics, as well as the geological and biological record of our planet.  when we merely faced man made nuclear war, rather than hooking in Mother Nature in a planetary de-terraformation that will take us back to conditions well before when we left the trees 8 mya, and there are now 7,800 million of us..... we could rationally take a peek at life 40 years ahead.  anyone that does that today is very ignorant.

what is this nonsense about?

Alleyn's in Camberwell?

Sounds the opposite of my ex who would always say we lived in Dulwich, though our house was firmly in SE5!

A trip to Australia in 1981 changed all that. I had a three day stopover in Manila and Asia had me snared - hook, line and plonker.

Very similar to me, albeit 10 years later.

Packed my job in, in Liverpool, and planned a 6 month trip travelling round Australia. The day before I booked my return trip, I bumped into a fella in my local pub called Jimmy McNally, we got talking, and he told me he had a bar in a place called Pattaya in Thailand, called Jimmy Macs. A gallon of lager later, he had persuaded me to stop off in Thailand at the start of my trip.

I enjoyed the holiday so much, I cut short my Oz trip by 2 weeks, and returned to Thailand.

After 42 further trips here, I took the plunge, and bought a bar in Issan ! Had a great 10 years doing that, then decided my health had to come first, sold up, and officially retired at 55. Had I not bumped into Jimmy, (who sadly passed away about 16 years ago, although the bar is still there), I would probably never decided to visit this country.

I am not very nostalgic and I don’t spend much time guessing what might happen in the future.  The only thing that interests me is how long I might stay healthy and active, as I have no interest in staying around past my sell by date.  I suppose I could be around for another thirty years but probably not forty.

I am, however, grateful I discovered Bangkok in 1975 while still studying at university.  I, too, was bitten by the Asia bug but in my early teens when we moved to Hawaii.  When I graduated from university in 1977 I made one last attempt at getting Thailand out of my system but I failed miserably.  I went home briefly to tell my parents I was moving to Thailand, even though I had no plan and no idea what I would do here.

I successfully avoided having children and also avoided marriage until I was in my forties.  I suppose my life in Thailand has had a few more twists, turns and surprises due to my relative freedom to do what I want, when I want.

Grear story about how one small encounter can change a life. Hope your health is good.

I will be 104 and found dead in bed with two Thai girls, both in their 80's.  :shock1:

By the powers invested in me, I have been given them by my wife, I hereby declare you will post further but shall from this day use the TV moniker

NCC and bookends.

My bet is that within forty years from now the Chinese will have taken big parts of Asia inclusive Thailand (the same for the muslims in Europe).

The most of us expats will be forced to learn basic mandarin, the walking street will not be as we know it today, but will survive, the visa rules will worsen and we will still not be able to own a piece of land …

With other Words - same same, but different ...

NORTH Dulwich, surely... bit like those in Battersea insisting on it being called South Chelsea...

You know as well as I, if you have money, anything is realistic.   At 104, performance, not money may be your main concern....or maybe not .

In BKK in 2059 I reckon calling the local corner shop for your weekly beer delivery will mean waiting on the steps for the gondola delivery.

Nope.

The Dutch were called in just in time, Bangkok stopped sinking and the sea level dropped because of a new ice age.

My apologies! It was a long time ago and I often played truant..

I think the school refers to itself as being in Dulwich though East Dulwich might be more accurate. My eldest brother went to Dulwich College......he was the smart one of the family.

Extremely well written with very astute observations.  How about writing a book?

Thank you for your kind comments.

I have many ideas for books. But I am concentrating on my daily work at Thaivisa for now. That and raising by daughters, something I take very seriously even if they don't...

You mean it hit rock bottom. I still go for the idea that if they somehow got rid of all the plastic in the sea then Soi Dolphins would be a nice change from Soi Dogs.

Who will get your 7,000,000B 12 month seasoned retirement visa escrow from the Thai bank?

Another good week Rooster. Lots has happened, some good, some bad, some stupid acts resulting in death, but the world has not blown apart yet. Snowing in May where I live, Springtime in Alberta.

Keep up the good stories, it is where I keep up to date with my Thailand news.

Geezer
