Have just realised my steel frame roof does not have any grounding.

I did consider just running a cable up from the consumer unit and bolting it to the steel

But after having a look at my original ground I think an upgrade is in order.

As I already have some 16mm copper cable that I could use to run to a new ground rod, I think the 16mm is over kill but as I already have it why not.

Is it acceptable just to run the new earth cable from the consumer unit, then into the roof space, clamping the cable to the steel beams up there before taking it through the side of the building and down to the new ground rod.

Yeah, that works for me too.

You may find that the roof steel is already a good ground anyway (Google "Ufer ground"), ours actually measures better than the 2m rod.

I would use self-drilling screws to attach to the roof steel, just make sure that you have a good path from the consumer unit to the rod.

Thanks

As you can see i'm no electrician.

To be fair I wouldn't want a drunken old electrician working on my house.

On another thread (I’m feeling a strange hum or light tingling feeling on my skin when I touch my computers) there’s a video of fitting a ground rod, this shows an isolating strip connection fastened to the wall, I have never seen anything like this before, what is the purpose of it and do they use them here in Thailand.

The video said it is to isolate the internal ground from external. (?)  Never heard of that and can only imagine some bizarre scenarios where it would be of much consequence.  Seems like a good example of overkill to me and I doubt can be found in Thailand.

As an aside, bigger is always better with a CPC (ground cable) purely for the mechanical endurance it provides.
