Australian Ambassador to Thailand Allan McKinnon.

PHUKET: Australian Ambassador to Thailand Allan McKinnon has made his stance on Australians travelling to Thailand very clear: they need to read travel advisories and learn about the culture and the risks present in the places where they are travelling to, take out appropriate insurance and use common sense while abroad to not take risks they wouldn’t take back home.

Amb McKinnon made his position clear to The Phuket News during a visit to the Class Act Media offices in Kathu last Tuesday (Apr 30), accompanied by Australian Consul-General for Phuket Craig Ferguson.

“Most important is that people need to follow the travel advice,” Amd McKinnon said.

Let's be honest. There are many stupid people in OZ, just as there are in all countries. Stupid people do not suddenly become smart when they travel abroad.

On the point of effectiveness in providing consular services and support, Amb McKinnon gave high praise to Mr Ferguson for his role in setting up and operating the Australian Consulate-General in Phuket.

“Craig is very modest about it, but he has done a fantastic job here,” he said"

Always wondered what Craig got up to after The Late Late Show ended...

Pretty simple. If you care about safety, don't go.

Another government official speaking the usual BS. What else is he going to say. Most politicians just blabber out what anyone would consider being a common sense approach anyway.

It's the same as saying .. if you travel overseas, be careful, read the manual.

Honestly given some the comments here in regards to the Ambassadors pertinent comments, as exemplified by the number of cases they handle vis a vis other Australian Embassy's some of you here need to grow up or get a life; probably both. The advice is relevant and reinforces what should be good practice. Yes, some OZ residents do leave a portion of their brain behind when they come here, especially on holidays, and to reinforce proper care and actions in accordance with Thai culture and laws is sensible, good advice given the number of demands on Embassy staffs time. His other comments re stat decs etc and Thai requirements hit the nail on head and provide transparency in regards to the rationale for their actions.
