May 31, 20197 yr Popular Post Not taking this too seriously, but I am slightly annoyed and now I hate cows. In the last 3 years in my new house in a small village with my girlfriend and her easy-going, no-trouble family, I have enjoyed daily retirement spent mostly on my front porch doing not a lot. However 3 weeks ago our nearest neighbours, well-to-do farmers, decided that their 6 cows would be better off sharing the garden of their home, which is directly across from us. We had a few telltale signs like him felling 3 trees and ‘acquiring’ a supply of long bamboo. This said bamboo was soon knocked into a coral and we expected the worst, we knew he had cows elsewhere. Sure enough the cows arrived. I should say at this point I have gotten used to village life. It can be boring sometimes but I think I have done ok with adapting. I can put up with the 2-dogs-per house and the hundreds of noisy chickens, which are normal features of village life. However no one else keeps their cows at home. I now hate cows, they smell bad, they sh*t on the road when he takes them to graze elsewhere and sometimes they run away at full pelt and takes hours to find and bring them back. I admit my girlfriends nose seems to be more sensitive than mine, and so she often refuses to sit outside with me because of the smell. There are 3 other houses close enough to be impacted and all, including my girlfriend, have complained to the village chief, whose house is close but just out of range of the toxic gases. He is disinterested to say the least. The other houses all have kids, we don’t, and they are worried about the increase in flies etc and other health issues living so close to large animals. Any other village dwellers have this? Is it normal? Are there livestock laws for prohibiting keeping them in populated areas? Update today: Another neighbour has told us it is temporary while he renews their original cow shed on his distant farm, but as the coral has now developed further and is now looking better than his house, I have good reason to doubt that. PS No one has a buffalo here.
May 31, 20197 yr We have a local cow lady.... She seems to think that any plot, within 2km radius of her house, is valid grazing rights for her beasts !! Our plot, which we are trying to landscape and cultivate new shade trees, is within this target zone. As we are not there on a permanent basis, it's difficult to stop her letting the beast free range... Our village headman says keep her cows if they stray on our land ???? He's a funny guy.... Basically, nothing gets done about it.. So I might have to investigate an electric fence, preferably mains powered !!
May 31, 20197 yr Popular Post What a load of BS, you live in a village, villagers keep cows. We have 2 bulls next to our home, i feed them from my wheelchair. Neighbour behind has 6/7, neighbour next door has 3, if you take care of them keep them clean, no smell. So you think the Poo Yai Bahn should do something, think again, he wont.

Not quite correct, commercial farms yes, less than 10 pigs ok, chickens also handful around ok, large flocks not allowed.
May 31, 20197 yr Author I should add this village is a compact area with houses, a sizeable school, convenience stores etc. I'd say it's relatively affluent. Almost all the Thai have large swathes of land surrounding the village, many have cattle, rubber plantations, pineapples you name it, but this is the first time anyone has kept cows in their garden.

Bad advice : and now look at it this way ... he goes to the gov administrator, they impose ban on her cattle grazing in the village ... therefore anyone else in the village who may have livestock. What the heck do you think most of the village will do after they find out he made all this trouble ??? Edited May 31, 20197 yr by steven100
May 31, 20197 yr Popular Post We don't have cows but the village is full of huge buffaloes, at first I was nervous of them but not anymore, they graze outside my house, I use the dung as fertilizer. They are rather timid considering their size and it takes some time before they will let you approach and stroke them especially when they have calves, my dog plays with the calves when the mother allows it, it's amusing, it's part of the village life that I treasure.
May 31, 20197 yr Popular Post My house is surrounded on 3 sides by fields containing aforesaid beasts... apart from them farting at night and snuffling around waking up my dogs no real problems. May 31, 20197 yr Popular Post Many, if not most families in "our" village have cows. Mostly kept at home, with a couple of regular grazing herds. Guess living right next to them would be a problem. As it is, surrounded by fields used for grass (no grazing, no chemicals, just the occasional harvesting). The plot right next to ours is used for grazing, but only a handful of cows, which keep the weeds down. We let the owner bring them on our land while house is being built - free fertilizer, weed control, and extra packing of soil. We also get thanked, smiles and a pair of eyes watching out for undesirables. I think the rules about livestock, inasmuch as such stuff is getting enforced, do not apply for village lands defined as used for agricultural purposes, but probably go to do with whether the village is within city limits etc. Most times, complaining about such stuff is a dodgy premise - especially if many people got them. One reason we chose are plot is that its on the edge of the village - cheaper, and less chances of having such issues with neighbors.

It's his GF, not his wife, and it is indeed up to her, and the other Thais to sort this. Hopefully the OP knows that interfering himself is not a good idea. Of course, there are ways of removing the problem, but don't tell anyone, or everyone will know. I notice the OP refers to his "new house". I trust he didn't actually pay for that himself, believing that nothing would ever change to turn paradise into a living hell. Many Thais discover that when a rock grinding plant or an all night disco starts up next door. This story has been told many, many times in LOS- no wonder the Thais don't smile anymore.

Unless Thai cows are different, I don't understand that. I worked a couple of years on dairy farms and never found them to stink, or fart loudly enough to be heard in the house. BTW, I don't think it's farting- more likely belching, which is apparently how they get rid of the gas resulting from digestion of grass, though that may just be sheep. I'm not sure.

May 31, 20197 yr Popular Post Need to chill a bit on this Bro' and not get too revved by it .. First up they are handful of cows .. Imagine if you had a load of hooligan Chang move in next door .. Go over an' meet with them have a chat and just break the ice abit .. They are docile creatures that admittedly leave a bit to be desired on the personal hygiene front but are quite harmless .. Once everyone's comfortable in each others company then you will find that it won't be an issue any longer .. You may even find that as and when they are moved back to the original abode they will be missed not be around .. Ye'z gotta be at one with it 'ere Bro' don't kick off about things .. you may end up creating more prob's for yourself ..
