Rayong: Police bigwig stops to help stricken German pensioner

Caption: So who was he then?

Locals in downtown Rayong were impressed when a police dignitary in a ceremonial white suit stopped to give first aid to a German pensioner who had been knocked off his bicycle.

Pol Maj Thanathip Jitrakhanee of the Rayong tourist police just happened to be passing after attending an alms giving ceremony.

A 76 year old German man was taken to hospital after being involved in a collision with a motorcycle ridden by a thirty three year old ice factory worker from Myanmar.

The German suffered an injury to his leg. The motorcycle rider was slightly injured.

The accident happened around 9 am near a local fruit market in the eastern seaboard city. Muang Rayong police are investigating.

Police Big wig?

Article says he is a Major, that is middle of the pack officer, certainly not a big wig.

It would be even more impressive he was to do his job in tackling the daily road carnage.

Well, he did good, but this shouldnt be news, or maybe since he did help, it should be news!

Lol, isn't it illegal NOT to help anyway?

If you see someone in need and ignore it without helping them its a criminal offense in 99% of the world.

It is perhaps news because of the perceived rarity that people stop and help when there is an accident or someone is hurt.

This is not so in my experience, when someone is 'mildly hurt' there are plenty of people who come out to help. But, knowledge of First Aid is extremely limited amongst Thailands population, thus whenever there is a more serious injury people may not be able to help or are scared to help, they rely on the prompt arrival of the body-snatchers to throw the injured party into the back of a pickup and race them to the nearest hospital (where they would get paid).

Regardless, someone stopped and helped. His Uniform drew attention and he was identified as a Police Major in the Tourist Police. He did well to stop, hopefully this news will encourage others to help when they can.

Never a big wig. Hair's way too short.

'wonder what kind of ice they make...  The cold and wet kind, or the powdery kind?
