A South Korean actress faces up to five years in a Thai jail for catching endangered giant clams in a reality TV stunt, an official said Saturday (Jul 6), despite the show’s extensive apology.

Lee Yeol-eum was filmed diving for giant clams at a Thai marine park for a Jun 30 episode of “Law of the Jungle” – a popular South Korean reality show.

After prising two giant clams from the coral-laid seabed, Lee pumped them in the air yelling “I caught it!”

The creatures are listed as an endangered species and protected under Thai law. A picture of 23-year-old Lee picking up the mollusks started circulating online, bringing the star of Korean TV drama “My First Love” to the attention of authorities.

Whilst not condoning protected clams I sincerely hope that what ever punishment the Thais impose on this Korean then the South Koreans retaliate by acting against all the Thais undertaking illegal act

Oh boy, the producers of the show fail to do their homeworks properly not knowing Thai laws regarding protected wild and marine life, still, a hefty fine and a 'don't do this again you hear' warning should put this issue to bed...

My first love =food , just cant let creatures live ,if it moves its got to end up on a dinner plate with rice or noddles....Life at the top of the food chain !

Thai officials I fear are more interested in the brown envelopes they may receive for letting this go away than they are for the protection of endangered specious.   Not talking about the specialist workers , rather the government organisation officials responsible.

She should keep clam and wait for her government to intervene.

even if she is back in Korea...she and the producers should still acknowledge their stupidity and offer some agreed upon compensation in good faith ..that would be the proper thing to do

The police will figure out a way to find Lee even if she’s no longer in Thailand, Narong added.

Just like they have tried to find the Red Bull guy

She could not win either way not only by capturing a giant clam but if she swum naked and exposed her clam she would be just as guilty ! marvelous Thailand

One can only hope the authorities are going to show some mussel and won't cockle up the prosecution of this heinous crime.

That's what you get for taking a clam out in public, in Thailand ...

More ridiculous comments from clueless officials

Surely an Interpol Red Notice is in order here?

It will only take a couple of weeks to translate into Engrish.

Actually the RTP could probably copy & paste some of the Red Bull Interpol translation, could save a bit of time before someone disposes of the evidence down their throat.

Never under estimate how low the producers of reality shows will go in order to get press. This can be a song and dance for eye balls with no bite, like the say any press is good press!

Silly stunt should have gone after the common turd often found floating around basking in the sun????

...only ever setting an example when foreigners are involved....???

If they go to town on her and make the penalty stick I wouldn't like to be a Thai in South Korea at the moment.

Your documents had better be squeaky clean and any restaurant you go to eat in... well I wouldn't go out to eat, chefs have a nasty way of exacting retribution !!!

They're very very good at finding people and stopping accused people fleeing the country. Didn't you know?

Just ask them about Red Bull boy, Yingluck and her eldest Brother!

somebody in Thailand will be in trouble, usually a live show can only be produced having all up to date permits, insurance, security & emergency crew, etc.,,,,, maybe given permits vs brown envelope and it backfired

They also have adopted well to land living and shelter in parliament house

seems a sound logical (thai logic) way to stimulate south korean tourism in thailand

Damn - I clicked on this expecting to read that she got her tits out.

Ah well.................

thailand needs tourists, tat (tourism authority of thailand) won't make a fuss of this incident. in a few days, it will be business as usual

How could you possibly know the reaction of the Korean media to a Thai,or any other foreign

national breaking strict environmental laws in a TV stunt for a "reality" show?
