Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan  has suggested fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra should wash his hands of politics when he turns 70 on July 26th and urged the Pheu Thai party to stand on its own feet.

The chairman of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) made his suggestion, in a TV interview today, in response to Thaksin’s tweet that he would celebrate his 70th birthday privately, with his family only, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he has taken refuge since fleeing Thailand about a decade ago.

Thaksin said his home is not big enough to accommodate the many people who have expressed their wish to join his birthday celebration, adding that it is not possible to hold celebrations outdoors because the temperature is almost 50 degrees Celsius.

Thaksin is a convicted criminal and therefore should have no political life whatsoever .

The convictions only hold as much merit as the courts that convicted him, pretty much zero.

Thaksin should give up politics but will his political enemies give him up or the media stop bringing him into the spotlight. For the former they need him as the bogey man while the latter want to sell their news.

But khun jatuporn who will pay the bills, or do you expect him to retire from politics but keep the money flowing?

Would be real good news if Thaksin gives up politics. I doubt it will happen all the Thai dinosaurs seem to want to go on forever. Maybe if he stops he can tell Suthep and Charlem to join him in retirement. That would be a day to celebrate 3 fossils gone at once ????

But I doubt that Thaksin or the other two will stop.

Yea its not good for the PTP they havent been in government for a while no time to bleed the country dry like the junta is doing now. So their war chest will be low and the lower it gets the more people will jump ship.

Thaksin was the greatest PM this country has ever had, no angel, but up against Prayut he sure looks like one. He and his sister have sacrificed enough and now it's Thanathorn's time and his time will come eventually if he plays it smart.

Sacrificed? On what planet do you live? Have you any idea how much money they acquired during their time in power?

There are some who continue to justify every act of repression in current Thailand because it is all in the interest of fighting the ultimate wickedness, the man from Dubai.

And like a London bus, here one comes now.

No, please tell us - with supporting detail.

Before making a fool of yourself, bear in mind all wealthy people made a lot of money during Thaksin's time as PM. Look at the stock exchange indices.

I'm only talking about Thaksin (who did bend the rules and should be made accountable for that). There's no evidence Yingluck abused her position though I note you repeat that lie.

Thaksin? much as the others I'd think and he still did massively more for Thailand than anyone since. Happy days.

 Yingluck? nothing I'd say.

Clearly you have no idea, that's why you offer no substance to your baseless regurgitations of junta propaganda.

In 2001, before becoming PM, Thaksin was worth US$1.2 billion, 18 years later he is now worth US$1.8 billion.

Here's an interesting comparison, the Chearavanont brothers, owners of CP and the biggest financial backers of the Junta have seen their wealth increase from US$3 billion in 2009 up to US$30 billion in 2019 - not a bad return for backing Suthep's mob eh? Do you really think a company known for frozen seafood and convenience stores won contracts to build railways because they tabled the best tender package?

Good advice from Jatuporn.

Thaksin looks ghastly in recent photos.

This dismissive statement from a long time capo should be seen as a sure sign that the boss man's support base is starting to desert him.

he and his sister sacrificed enough tax payer money for their own enrichment.

He did that already (according to what he posted on  the internet) when he fled the scene long time ago.

They've got some new bogeymen and women now, the three leading lights of Future Forward Party.

Thaksin is getting old.So are his enemies.Like it or not Thailand is changing and a new generation will call the shots and they will be young. The sound and fury of today's political divisions will be a thing of the past.

It's like the epilogue of Stanley Kubrick's film Barry Lyndon.

"It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarrelled; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now."

They shouldn't need bogeymen or women to help their cause if they have good records of working for the people. They should be able to stand on their own on good policies alone. In fact, they need not cheat at the polls to have the people mandate. FFP has shown the way to in their first election to be a serious contender by just talking on good policies.

Prem was the godfather of thai junta till his very death at 100. The majority of senate is around 70 and they were just “elected” for some 5 years term. And they are well paid for their useless job of voting each time yes for their master and voting no for each opposition bill.

As always, it’s not about agism, but about the mind and ideas, which person can contribute to the society. Thaksin had to offer, and still is offering, some novel ideas to thai politics. On the other hand, young fascists from ppp are taking thailand backwards to feudalism
