Amlo are hoping to recover at least some of the costs of keeping the Phoenix tour boat wreck at the the Rattanachai Shipyard, on the east side of Phuket Town. Photos: Amlo

PHUKET:-- The Phoenix tour boat, which sank off Phuket in July last year killing 47 Chinese tourists, will go up for auction again at the Phuket City Municipality offices this Wednesday (Aug 7).

Following the disaster on July 5, 2018, raids led to the discovery that the operators of the boat had laundered more than B1 billion. This led to the seizure of operators’ assets, which are being auctioned off by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo).

Since January of this year alone, the boat has incurred up to about B918,000 in costs for being kept at the Rattanachai Shipyard, on the east side of Phuket Town.

Take it back out to sea, as close as possible to where it sank, get some monks to do some chanting and make it a shrine for those that perished, sink it and let nature take control and turn it into a reef for the local sea life, also make sure it is out of bounds to divers etc.

You nasty money grabbing pieces of detritus.

I presume they're sending the bill to the families of the dead in China.

They will be stuck with this festering albatross forever unless the money monsters cut their losses and do the right thing and cut it up like any other self respecting country would????

The problem will only be the winnings. They have to land a jackpot of close to 1 billion to break even.

True, and selling it as a complete ship is utterly disrespectful to the 49 human beings who lost their lives, there should be just one action, break it up now and sell it for crap.

You mean like the UK, selling the Herald of Free Enterprise?

I find it rather ridiculous that they've racked up nearly a million in storage fees (since January - not counting last year's fees) - just to have this wreck parked in the back corner of some storage yard. Someone is taking the piss on that one.

If they cleaned the wreck up and were more realistic with their expectations they might find a buyer. Unfortunately it seems they are hoping to get something near to what it would have been worth if it hadn't sunk (or had 47 people die on it).

As someone else mentioned, it would be better served as a memorial, sunk near where the tragedy happened (with a plaque on it) where it could be the start of an artificial reef.

Otherwise it likely won't be worth much more than it's scrap value.

It is at a shipyard, the only local shipyard where a ship that size can enter. And yest, that yard is expensive, but the fees charged are at a significantly reduced rate. Having said that, I am sure the owner of the shipyard is happy.

  • Popular Post

Wonder who owns the shipyard? ????????

They could put the wreck on display opposite of the Rassada pier parking lot as a memorial for the people deceased and a warning not to enter ships without the right life saving equipment and licenses including the captain.

To would be Thai purchasers, this would be a "Pee" Boat (Ghost ship) no respecting Thai or other Asian would purchase this boat, unless you want to hold Ghost tours

Is that the topic and that was sold for scrap what's your point?????

Hard to imagine a vessel such as this, with a well demonstrated seaworthiness, not being snapped up

When you say ‘they’ let’s be clear it is not the view or opinion of all THAI people and only of those stinking of pure greed who are trying to sell this vessel for financial gain.
