More than 100 households in the village of Ban Non Peg in Maha Sarakham had to be evacuated starting at 2am on Saturday (August 31) after a flash flood engulfed the area.

Police, soldiers and administrative officials helped villagers evacuate with belongings including cars, motorcycles, appliances and clothes as the water steadily rose to its current depth of one metre.

Chatwate Aksorn, 61, a villager, said it was the first flash flood he’d seen in 10 years of living at Ban Non Peg.

“When I woke up this morning the water had already reached my front door,” he said. “I couldn’t move my car, which was parked inside the house, and had to call the Army for help.”

Officials expected the evacuation to take all day to complete and speculated that heavy rain in adjacent Kaedum district triggered the flood.

If there is no rain for the next few days, the situation should improve, they said.
