Minster targets 20,000 less accidents a year in "culture of safety" initiative

A leading member of the government has called for " a long term culture of safety" to be initiated on the Thai roads. 

 

Deputy interior minister Niphon Bunyamanee wants to see 20,000 less accidents on the Thai roads per year. 

 

And he wants a dent in the number of fatalities that have seen the Thai roads named as some of the most deadly on earth. 

 

Niphon admitted that the death toll per year is higher than 20,000 though he was not more specific. 

 

He said this needs to be addressed as the impact was devastating both in terms of personal loss as well as economic impact.

 

He stated in Chiang Mai that the government is getting serious about the state of the roads and plans to implement many measures to combat the loss of life and damage to property. 

 

He mentioned several initiatives and commented upon law enforcement saying that the north and Chiang Mai province in particular could be at the forefront of change.

He was speaking at a conference attended by 500 civil servants including the Governor of Chiang Mai at The Empress Hotel. 

 

A backdrop to the event indicated that the north and north east were trying to create a long term culture of safety on the Thai roads. 

 

Niphon was pictured in front of a cartoon character having a go on what appeared to be a motorcycle game in front of a computer screen. 

 

Several smiling civil servants were pictured with him and on stage giving a thumbs up.

Given 74% of road deaths are motorcycles, I think the priority is pretty clear...

 

Unfortunately, Thailand does not have a clue. It's all presentations, powerpoint slides and rhetoric - nothing happens...ever.

 

Let me help you Niphon - Valid licenses, helmet laws, bike roadworthy, proper fines and enforcement.

Get rid of the two way u-turns,have one turning Left only,

then another at least 100 yards away turning Right only.

 

One near us over the last few years 20 + people have been killed

and that's only one.

They first need to do something about the Culture of Aggressive Driving and Road Rage.  Then, the Culture of Ignorance of Traffic Laws.  And then, the Culture of Ignoring Traffic Laws and Traffic Tickets.  And let's not even discuss the Culture of No Police Patrolling the Roads for Moving Violations (no matter as only 20% of those ticketed by the fines).

They have a long, long row to hoe before they ever get to their Culture of Safety.  And from what I've seen on the road the police drive in the same manner as the general public.  So essentially a Culture of Safety is unattainable.

The roads are lawless and a complete free for all. This morning in Bangkok I saw a bicycle going the wrong way, motorbike taxis going through red lights, motorbikes on the pavement and illegal u - turning by cars. 

 

People mention Thai people being very respectful, which they mostly are, but one important thing they sadly do not have is a respect for the laws of the road.

So this means (as of last year 22,491) there will only be 2,491 per year. These idiots are just unbelievable. What ever comes into their tiny vacuous brains as a thought bubble they'll sprout out like some village idiot.
