Original birth certificate required for probate

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately a few weeks ago my mother passed away in Thailand. She had been living there for the last 15 years.

She has a will in place at her lawyers office.

One of the requirements listed for the lawyer to take the probate case to court is my birth certificate (*original)

I am an Irish citizen by the way.

I don't have my original birth certificate. Will a certified copy of my birth cert be acceptable?

Very sorry for your loss mate. That's all I really came here to say. However...

I'm no legal expert but I should think expecting the original would be frankly unreasonable, if it's gone, it's gone.

in UK i believe copies of BC are the short version, not the full long version, i have never had a full long version, as post 2 i believe it unreasonable to require an original. good luck, and sorry for your loss, but i believe she lived a dream for the last 15 years.

Why not ask the lawyer?

I would venture to suggest that if you obtain  your birth certificate from  the  registration office where you were born, or the Irish equivalent, and then present it, the lawyer wouldn't know the difference.
