U-turn on ban of three farm chemicals angers Bhumjaithai party

In an abrupt about-turn, which threatens to cause a rift in the Government’s coalition, the new National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC), chaired by Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit of the Palang Pracharat party, overturned its predecessor’s decision to ban paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos effective from December 1st.

The NHSC endorsed a proposal by the Agriculture Department for a postponement of the ban for six months and allow the controlled use of the herbicide glyphosate for indefinite period.

The committee also assigned the Agriculture Department to find alternative substances to replace paraquat and chlorpyrifos.  It was also instructed it to work out measures to mitigate health threats to the public and any other impacts caused by the continued use of the three hazardous chemicals. The department is to report back to the NHSC within four months from today.

right up there with concern for air pollution, demonstrates thai government's concern for the health of the public here

When will this government make a decision and stick to it! The evidence is clear to anyone with half a brain that these chemicals are a serious danger to health. Another report in 4 months will not change that fact, and more farmers will have health problems! Oh and what about the subsidised tractors they were promised for giving up the use of these poisons?

no  it  isnt especially  on  paraquat  where they  state "probably  carcinogenic"

Find alternatives....mitigate health effects....just words no action....

all you need to do is look to the gov on how it handles air pollution in the north...just words no action....

so it knowingly allowing carcinogens to be used of food consumed by the public...so if they had a democratic process, there would be lawsuits all over the place...

instead, the zombie world lives on...

Enact - hear complaints - retract.  The usual sequence.

"probably carcinogenic" ....so can we extrapolate from this statement than that any activity or substance that may 'probably injure / maim / kill' you is therefore safe?

If a doctor or health professional told me i would 'probably get cancer' or 'probably die' if i continued to persist in my behavior ...I would, unsurprisingly attempt  to stop that behavior.

If there is a final decision between doing what is right and good and what is unethical  and bad - the junta will ALWAYS choose what is unethical and bad!

Resign? Thai MPs don't resign even if they are sentenced to death for murder or have a shady past as a drug smuggler revealed! A u-turn? That's pretty standard practice.

Profits above health care.

People with good intentions make promises; people with good character keep them.

It's all about money. Someone had a big juicy envelope.

Government doesnt care because they arent smart enough to be empathetic about anything. I run a farm and its completely organic yet all my neighbours are dropping off like flies. Country is retarted!! All peopple that dont agree should stop eating cp products and all market rubbish. Its all toxic! Then they will be forced to ban this sht. We grow all our own fruits and veg. Wont touch market, supermarket produce. Its seriously toxic and im no scientist but when i look around at the people eating this stuff i put 2 and 2 together????????

Never, ever, under any circumstances expect this administration to do the right thing, or anything to benefit the Thai people. Always assume they will sell out to corporate interests, above the safety and well being of the public. That is simply who they are.

A bit of argy bargy between health and greed.Bhumjaithai can always take their bat and ball and go play with others then sh!t will hit the fan and Phalang Pracharat with be standing under the fan covered in it.Prayute will have to step in to save his skin.

You cant really  tell anything can you, if they had some strong evidence it would  be  better but "probably" doesnt really cut  it

The problem is NOT that it should be forbidden but that the Thai governement as always takes a decision without realising the consequenses. So no time for the affected people to find alternatives. So yes, should be forbiden but NOT next week.

It seems that nobody in the world has been able to do that or they would just start using the alternative if you could do it you would show everybody how easy it is and make a motza at the same time or maybe it has been done and the big chemical companies are suppressing it to hang on to their market at the expense of people's health and well being.

And the citizens will just smile and let it be. Enjoy your poisoned food. Mai pen rai.

Over on the Thai speaking farmers forum the celebrations have already begun!

And some people with a complete brain may disagree with those with half a brain.
