Moving to thailand in a year from US. I want to bring some computer parts with me like gpu, hard drive and buy the rest of the parts in thailand such as the case and power supply. I want to bring my 25 inch 240hz monitor, what would be the best way to do that? Also what is the best place to buy computer parts in thailand, preferably online by delivery?

Hand luggage. But you can buy everything here actually.

wheres the best place to buy computer parts? i know about aliexpress and lazada and shopee and power buy and invadeit. usually the prices actually seem a bit more expensive in thailand, for example my monitor xg2530 is $280 on amazon but i saw on lazada its $380. When you say hand luggage, u mean the checked luggage? Would a monitor fit in a standard checked suitcase?

hand luggage is the luggage you carry onto the plane and stow it in the overhead locker.

I buy all my computer stuff from invadeit, I personally would not risk a monitor in my checked baggage as the baggage handler are pretty rough and iam not sure if I could pack it well enough to ensure it does not get damaged or stolen.

oh the carryon, well i bring a backpack that i keep at my feet, so i guess i can bring another bag onto the plane for the overhead? are you suggesting me putting the monitor in a suitcase for the overhead bin, or some kind of box? also, how does international shipping work, if i decide to not bring it on the plane? Like if i tell my family to mail it from the USPS to my thai address, would this work? If so what kind of cost should I expect the shipping to be for a monitor?

This is a good shop where I buy parts all the time:

https://www.jetcom.co.th/index.php

It's in Thai but all the important product names are in English.

I think it's also possible to order from them online.

Personally I prefer to go to the shop in Fortune Town, look at things in real life, and then buy what I want.

They also build systems together if you want that.

Some time ago I transported a 17" monitor in check-in luggage. I guess you can do it with the big screen. The best is probably if you have the original box for that thing.

put it in a small carry on suitcase.

That is a good questions.

If you are unlucky some custom official decides you have to pay xyz. But maybe not. It's a gamble.

Make sure you check your airlines baggage policy as a lot of carriers have cracked down of late, e.g. one bag for overhead measuring x y z and a small laptop bag, both not exceeding 7kg.

We brought over our Apple 21 inch in the big bag that goes under, we put the screen into two blankets and and packed clothes below and above it, all worked out fine, lucky for us the bag showed up at the carousel because if that bag went missing I would have been out of pocket a couple of grand.

I just built a new pc in Phuket recently. I bought all the parts on Lazada and packed them into a mini itx case (silverstone sg13). This bad boy fits right in my backpack with a full size gpu and psu. As for my monitor, I kept my original box, pack it in there when I travel and either give it to the airline for checked luggage or give it to Kerry and ship it to myself depending on where I’m going.

You can find some really good deals on Lazada if you shop around. All the parts I bought were nearly the same price as the US.

you fit your entire case in your backpack <deleted>? can i see a pic of your case and pic of the backpack?

It’s all setup on my desk plugged in so I can’t take a pic of it in my backpack. I want to transfer it to something even smaller in the future but I’ll have to buy a sfx psu and a shorter card.

The pack i use is carry on approved and called the AER travel back pack. It’s quite expensive, but really good quality. There’s quite a bit of extra space as well, I’d imagine most backpacks could fit this case.

If you’re interested in mini builds check out the sffpc subreddit. There’s some really good ideas on there.

If you end up in Phuket and want to meet up let me know. Hard to find pc gamers down here. ????aer_travelpack2_black_award.jpg

so when you fly with it does it go in your checked luggage, or do you put it in a small suitcase in overhead bin?

Pc comes with me carry on. Monitor goes to checked luggage. Best to support the graphics card with some styrofoam if you have expensive parts or it could flex.

Also, stay away from liquid cooling especially closed loop or you risk TSA giving you a hard time.

well i plan on bringing a gpu, ssd, ram, hdd, cpu with me in my backpack and then buy the rest of the parts in thailand like case, cpu cooler and psu. my gpu is 2070 super MSI armor which is like 11.5 inches or something long, so i dont think it'd fit in a min itx case. would putting my gpu in my backback as a carryon with me be a good idea? https://www.amazon.com/Gator-Transporting-Screens-Monitors-Between/dp/B01CVSXMWG/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=suitcase%2Bfor%2Btv&qid=1576288213&sr=8-2&th=1#customerReviews

i think this bag would be good as a checked in bag, but i dont know the rules of airlines, would they allow a bag this big as a checked in? monitors are only around 10lbs and i know the weight limit is 50lb but im not sure about size limit. and if you play lol on garena or steam games you can pm me ur name

Yeah you’re idea is good bringing all the expensive parts and just wrapping them up in your backpack with clothes or something.

I think size/weight restrictions vary based on airlines. My monitor box I use is huge and never had a problem so I’d imagine that case is fine. Just look up whatever airline you plan on using and compare their max dimensions with that case.

I haven’t played lol in a while but I used to be obsessed. I’m like silver on NA servers last I checked ????. I play Rust and csgo when I have time.

Just eyeing that case it looks considerably smaller especially in thickness compared to my monitor box. I would still check the airlines restrictions before buying a $100 case just to be safe.

Here i found a picture of the box I use. I would also like to switch to a cool case like the one you linked eventually. My box is getting pretty beat up.

I'd advise you only take the important parts like the HD and perhaps the CPU, if it's a good one.

I always order parts for my bike from E-bay and other sellers. The shipping costs are crazy!!!

You'll find Advice shops in all provinces of Thailand where you can get all parts.

whats an advice shop? and is a shop like powermall cheaper for computer parts than lazada/aliexpress?

In my experience Lazada is always cheaper than every other shop/online store due to multiple sellers competing against one another. Always pick from sellers within Thailand to avoid long shipping times and taxes.

you mean choosing the "local" option on lazada searches? also is there a way to sort by price from low to high?

Edited by noodleslayer

Yeah exactly. Just filters out all the Chinese sellers.

I don’t think there’s an option to sort low to high but I could be wrong. I know you can specify a price range.

Currently, component prices seem a bit less here in Thailand.

I'm just building my first desktop PC in 30 years, not for gaming but for light photo and video editing. For all the components, including Ryzen 3 2200G processor, motherboard, PSU, SSD 1TB HD. 16 gb DDR4 3000 ram and case, it cost B11,400, mostly off Lazada. (No GPU needed as the Ryzen "G" series has pretty good built in Vega Graphics)   I checked the website PCPartPicker which gives a the prices of US suppliers and for the exact same set-up, the lowest I could find was the equivalent of 12,700, almost $40 more.

Edit:  I just realized the "PCPartpicker" list did not include the price for the motherboard which they said was unavailable.  $87 on Amazon so add that to the final price and the build cost almost $125 more in the US.

Maybe this is because of the strong Baht making imported goods cheaper here.  I sure looks like TV's sell for less here.  The BENQ monitor I've purchased was B5000, about the same as the same model in the US.
