Zero-alcohol beers to be taxed in 2020

The Excise Department has announced that it will tax non-alcoholic beers next year in an effort to prevent new drinkers. According to the Public Health Ministry, consumers regard the non-alcoholic drinks as an alternative to other drinks as they are considerably cheaper due to the lack of tax.

 

The makers are also able to distribute samples at educational institutes as they are labelled as non-alcoholic.

 

The department has now completed the HS code and tax rate for the 0-per-cent beers, which will be taxed at more than 14 per cent (regular drinks) but at less than 22 per cent (beer containing alcohol). The draft proposal will now be submitted to the cabinet for approval. The draft includes other products related to alcoholic drink such as beer tablets.

 

The director claimed that the tax rate will not affect the retail price since the 0-per-cent alcohol beers are being sold for almost the same price as ordinary beers but without the high taxes.

For the first time the other day in a Tesco Express I saw non-alcoholic Heineken in the soft drinks section, thereby enabling it to be pruchased outside the designated booze selling times.

So, just how does the imposition of this new tax discourage new drinkers?

They are fast running out of things to tax to bring in more money for the trough. May I suggest a window tax the same as was introduced in England in 1696......

The bad taste on that rubbish will certainly kill quicker than alcolhol. It should be labelled with a 125% tax.

Just introduced property taxes..

 

Thailand is going to turn into a <deleted> show after that. The effect will be huge as it will touch everyone and everything. Prices will go up and spending power/value will go down.

But we are soooooooo concerned withe everybody's health...like vaping ...and smoking....

So we tax alcohol- free beer, so people don't start drinking!

Because Heinecken 0 is the gateway- drug to lao khao and Coke is the gateway- drug to Long Island Icetea...

Everywhere I shop since the 'Sugar Tax' came in the NO Sugar soft drinks have also gone up = still more expensive then the Original sugar drinks....... even [was about the cheapest] Est Sugar Free you could just about anywhere Buy for 15 or 16 baht per litre bottle is now 23 - 25 baht !!!  So welcome even more Diabetics in Thailand.

No bad taste at all.

 

Useful for those of us who can't drink alcohol or don't wish to. I can spend a couple of hours in a bar drinking Heineken 0.0, better than water, coffee coke or whatever.

 

Also useful for those who like to make sneering posts.

So profit will go down? Doubt it. What we're likey to see is a price increase which may see 0% more expensive than beer. Logic is screaming at me NO POSSIBLE WAY, reality is screaming at me THIS IS THAILAND.
