I found this to be the case too, I used to date a Thai nurse that had Masters degree and she had great English skills (conversational anyways), one day I was playing this very stupid game and laughing at very bland dad jokes, she comes over and asks me why (here's the example)

image.png.06cf0ea5d7c7b0577bebcf09483b2f06.png

absolutely no idea what the joke was about, trying to explain made it worse, she got frustrated.

a while later, I sent them Filipino friend, she instantly got it

try watching something like Naked Gun, Airplane!, Monty Python or something similar with a Thai person and they will very likely only laugh at the physical gags, 90% of the rest will get nothing.

they don't seem to understand puns, plays on words, double entendre etc.

I do not believe you ever watched an Monthy Python movie with your Phil gf and she got it, if so she fooled you way to good, and you still not get it ????

I've had some great Indian & Mexican meals in the Philippines, not to mention Aussie meat pies and chips, and German breakfasts. Far better than the offerings in Chiang Mai.

Where in Phil do they have such a good range of international restaurants? You talking about Manilla?

Taste of food is also quite personal, and to be quite earnest, I do not eat chips, and continental, english or american breakfest is not on my list as good, just as can eat if have to.

I never had a Phil GF, Monty Python is a TV show (wasn't talking about the movies) and I have watched with 2 of them at the same time and they were laughing at the absurd jokes and and discussing them for the next 2 weeks I was there with plenty of quoting as well. (a thing that happens with anyone that never watched Monty Python back home as well)

whether you believe me or not makes no difference to me.

I watched 'Lethal Weapon' on the TV, while in bed with a Filipino 'friend', she understood every word.

She also listened to western and Latino music, and was knowledgeable about the singers.

My Thai wife or gf wouldn't have had a clue what was going on, despite being to speak English to a level far higher than most Thai graduates, they simply don't have the cultural concepts, and only listen to Mor lam.

I have no problem to believe you she understand Lethal weapon, but more complex humor as Monty Python as I refer to.

Ok I get it, the funny walks and the more stupid easy humor everyone gets as Mr Bean. Genious humor but still doesnt take much to get as the Naked Gun. I watched that 12 years old as well ????

Wow. I never realised that Mexican, Indian, Aussie and German food are subsets of Filipino food. Which provinces in the Philippines do they come from?

I do know that in Thailand, these are not considered Thai food.

However, when talking about food in the context of whether a country has good food, the de facto stance should surely be about the local food and not foreign, international food.

You consider Britain has good food?

6 years ago Thailand slightly had the upper hand 55-45..

However with visas nuisance and strong bht and foreigners leaving so nowadays I would rank it 30-70 in favor of Phillipines !

No problem

You are wrong and haven't spent longer than a holiday here. Anybody that has stayed in the Philippines knows the foods bad. Your remarks don't bother me. Paper thin  lol

So while u were in Phillipines what did u miss from Thailand? Submitting your TM30’S ?

why?

Dental and optical care, customer service in almost every industry, far superior selection of western foods at half Thai price, better climate, language/cultural differences...for sex pats, far more attractive women at cheaper costs plus cheap beer.....clothes and most household goods cheaper...the list is endless...I quite like flipper food if you try the cantinas...if its an issue, you can easily cook your own Thai food as everything is available there...

The two main advantages in the Philippines are the English spoken there and the relatively hassle free visas.  For Thailand the three for me is safety, infrastructure and food.

Is the crime rate in Philippines higher than Thailand?

Who are more friendly? Filipinos versus Thai...

Is it cooler or hotter in Philippines than Thailand?

Visa and Tm30 really sucks in Thailand.

I have been in Thailand 18months now with my Philipino gf who is qualified English teacher as opposed to the ones who just speak english which in Thailand seems to be the only qualification needed.

I came here to retire with a completely open mind but on the whole I have found Thais to be very insular, downright ignorant and uneducated most times at checkout I will always greet the person to be greeted back by nothing not even a look, the same when paying change and receipt pushed into your hand without any kind of recognition that you were ever there.

Impoliteness bugs me even just a smile helps I'm not saying this happens all the time but it is in my experience the norm.

I think that the only subject Thais excell in is rudeness and ignorance especially the men.

Customer care and satisfaction is non-existent I had a problem with my 5 seater 2 recliner settee purchased from Pattaya for 54k Bhatt when I got in touch with the store about problem theirs answer was for me to bring it into them to check it how the bloody hell do they expect you to do that.

Talking about understanding English my gf and I watch many Brit programmes together she gets and understands the humour completely including things like Dave Allen, only fools and horses and Tommy Cooper which all brits know not many foreigners get.

Siargao, Bohol, Cebu, Siquijor, Negros...and I’m sure I’ll add more to the list as I explore beautiful islands with pristine waters and many varieties of restaurants.

I do miss Thai food though.

brokenbone - I have based myself in Thailand with my Thai family for 23 years but have worked and lived in many Asian countries. I have worked and lived in Vietnam for approx 10 of those years and never ever experienced any problems with electricity supply or internet for that matter. Overall, the infrastructure in Vietnam is good.
