It's not a "mistranslation" but is used in a broader context. Usually close friends. I sometimes refer to my closest frieind as "like a brother" nothing more than that really.

Ya, all the posters above took the OP's use of the term "sister" to be blood relative sister. But I instead took it to mean the casual term Thai women typically use for close female friends as being their "sister."  Especially when the dating ex boy/GF came into the picture. Kids 5. Doesn't that way with her like getting bet up or giving her money to the Tim, although I don't know it for a fact..at least not with my money, pretty tight on it. She does 'go home' once in a while for a couple of days.

Been hunting for a while so do know bargirl call many of their close firneds sister. Remember asking about her family, and she, volunteerarily, show pics of her brother, and the 'sister' so I assumed it blood sister. Funny thing is she did say she's a tomboy when I asked about it...
