I'm arriving in Patong Beach soon. Where is the best place there to change pounds to baht? Does anyone know the current rate? Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are a couple of Value Plus outlets in Patong. Usually a slightly better rate that the banks. Google to find the locations and current ROEs.

Big variation in rates and best rates on the street booths and I too have found Value Plus pretty consistently good and have never been short changed.

 

I think it is wise not to exchange large sums too late at night in case some scumbag is watching. Sensible rule to use anywhere in the world.

There are three (bank) money changers directly in front of mcdonalds at jungceylon mall, Banzaan Market side of the mall. 
 

They often offer different rates for the same FX, so you can conveniently chose the one with the best rate among the three.

Setup GBP/THB/Notes.

 

Then checkout the money changers around Patong/Bangla rd. and allow about 0.1 Baht less.

Today best rates at changers in Bangkok are 39.6.

All bank rates simply bad.

I have noticed that smaller shops pay a better value for your money. walk around a bit and see whats going on. There are many small shops and bank operated shops. usually banks offer a lower value.
