Rescue workers on Monday were scrambling to try to free an Austrian man who was dangling precariously from the side of a cliff face in southern Thailand.

The incident occurred when Johannes Grasser had attempted to jump from the top of Khao Ok Talu in Phatthalung wearing a parachute.

However, his parachute became tangled on foliage and he was stuck at least 175 metres above the ground.

Grasser was part of a team of 9 Austrians who had travelled to Thailand take part in a parachuting performance on Saturday as part of the country’s Children’s Day celebrations.

He then attempted the jump again at 8.30am on Monday when his parachute got stuck.

Locals raised the alarm when they heard screams for help.

Unable to reach him from the top of the mountain, police said they were going to attempt to try and reach him by helicopter on Monday afternoon.

UPDATE - According to Daily News, Grasser was eventually rescued by a specialist abseiling team before being transferred to Phatthalung Hospital for treatment to a wound on his leg.

In total, Grasser was stuck for around eight hours.

UPDATE:

An Austrian parachutist who performed in the south for children's day continued his trip with his wife at an area known as Khao Ok Talu in Muang district of Phatthalung.

There Johannes K. jumped off a cliff but the wind blew him onto the cliff face 175 meters up from the ground where he got stuck.

His wife Lisa tried to rescue him but her rope was not long enough, reported Daily News.

A police helicopter and rescue teams were mobilized and the provincial governor and top police were on the scene.

The governor said that the Austrian had not had permission to make the jump at the cliff or even at the Children's Day show on Saturday.

Regulations about such things happening in the future would be looked into.

Despite not having experience of such a rescue the rescue teams were able to successfully help the Austrian who was exhausted after an eight hour ordeal but only slightly injured.

He was taken to hospital in Phatthalung.

He looked a bit shocked after being rescued as if he had landed in an eWok village..

..how embarrassing and expensive!

Probably a lot more pointing from police would have made that more interesting

maybe the junta leader could come and point at the cliff in the name of tourism

Hence my total agreement with the sentiments of @khwaibah

Total clown.

Staying at a temple near 3 Pagodas, I really wanted to climb the big outcrop behind the temple.  It's completely undeveloped, very steep and pretty much a jungle all the way to the top.  But the view would have been spectacular, all the way into Myanmar.

What stopped me was the realization that there were no rescue facilities like back home if I tripped and broke my ankle, got bit by a snake, or took a tumble.  I wasn't so worried about my own safety -I've climbed worse and for lesser views- but the risk I was imposing on anyone who may have been sent to rescue me.

Like some other posters, I hope his rescuers are well compensated for the risk he imposed on them.

And once again the "The world is my personal playground" crew forces other people to risk their health trying to help them out of self-inflicted peril. Send him a 2 million baht bill and ban him from the country.

I bet he doesn't pay the rescue costs.  So are we going to be forced to have 'rescue' insurance now? ????????
