I quite like myself, my friends and most people of my own race.  What on earth are you talking about?

I am English and most English people are great.  But I despise bullies and chavs like this.  Or am I supposed to love him no matter what he does merely because he is the same colour as me?  So you can behave in whatever manner you like but it's ok if you are of the same race?  I'm just wondering you understand.

Despite the thread headline, if you look carefully at the video there is a lot of ambiguity about what actually triggered the incident. This video was originally posted on an individual's Facebook page along with a narrative from the poster about what transpired. It was then picked up by a social media news compiler which then got picked up by the mainstream media. I do not believe any news reporter ever attempted to verify the version of events presented on the Facebook post.

 

If you look at the video, the person filming the incident appears to be seated a significant distance away from the main protagonists in the altercation and his view is also blocked by other passengers standing between the camera and the main protagonists. Presumably the person who filmed the incident also wrote the narrative of the incident. That narrative has varied in the news media from "the Thai guy bumped into the foreign guy" to the Thai guy "tried to take a photo of the foreign guy's girlfriend," despite there being no evidence on the video that the foreign guy was traveling with a female companion. On the video, the foreign guy can be heard to say "He [expletive] tried to..." which indicates that the foreign guy thought the Thai guy did something intentionally. The foreign guy also says "Where'd you get that i-Pad?" referring to the i-pad the Thai guy was holding. That sounds to me like the foreign guy was accusing the Thai guy of having acquired the i-Pad by illicit means, which supports the theory that the foreign guy was accusing the Thai guy of having attempted to pickpocket him. The foreign guy did have some type of shoulder bag and appeared to have ear pods in his ears which did make him a potential pick pocketing target.

 

It is also not clear whether the person who wrote the original narrative of the incident understood what the foreign guy was saying in English, or how he was able to determine what transpired leading up to the incident given that he was seated some distance away, and presumably would have had trouble hearing normal conversation over the sound of a moving sky train. In another news report, it is said that the Thai guy fled out onto the Hua Lamphong station platform looking for an official to help him. There's no evidence on the video that this happened and it's unclear how this was determined. The videographer appears to remain on the train and does not get off the train at Hua Lamphong. It occurs to me that it's possible that after the train left the station the videographer may have had an opportunity to discuss the incident with other passengers who were in a better position to see and hear what led up to the incident, but this is far from clear. Also, it is interesting to note that if the Thai guy truly was assaulted for no valid reason, no police report or news report of the incident seems to have surfaced. 

 

What needs to be remembered is that the video and the accompanying narrative about what happened came from an unknown source. Two languages were spoken during the incident and it isn't clear if the person interpreting the video understood what both parties were saying or was even able to hear what was being said. Nobody interviewed the two parties to determine what caused the incident.

 

Most of the posts on this thread vilify the foreign guy. Some outrageously speculate that he was on meth, pumped up on steroids, or apparently based entirely on his accent, genetically predisposed to pick fights or bully people on the flimsiest of pretexts. In reality he appears to be a clean cut, well groomed, physically fit guy either returning from or going to his morning jog. Some of the posters described the Thai guy as practically a child, when he appears to me to be at least in his mid-thirties. His exaggerated cowering, which struck me as somewhat theatrical, is what makes him seem child-like and extremely vulnerable. There is evidence on the video that the foreign guy thinks the Thai guy may have tried to pick pocket him. If that's what actually happened, this guy's reaction was far more understandable. This isn't an issue about being pro-Thai or anti-Thai or pro-English or anti-English, it's an issue about being fair to both sides.

Agree with the principle, and it would be interesting to hear both versions of the story, but i'm afraid it is not going to happen.

I suspect though, that the foreigner in the video is overreacting, even if accepting the pick-pocketing theory.

Thanks, but we still don't know the full story. Maybe the guy was trying to film up his girlfriend's dress. Just kidding. If the train station officials in fact said that's what happened, I'm inclined to agree that this guy seriously needs some anger management therapy.

And where in either video is the "girlfriend"? Nowhere. A complete fabrication to shift the blame from the Thai to the farang. Thai rak Thai.

At the :54 second mark on the video (post #372) there is a woman in a pale orange dress with a red shoulder purse in the background who seems to be emotionally involved in the incident and who may be the girlfriend. She may have gotten off the train by the door in the background which may explain why she doesn't appear in the immediate vicinity of the incident or when everyone is exiting the train.

If you watch the first video, the girl is much clearer. Doesn't look the type to be a farang's girlfriend, shows no involvement and can be seen moving over to the side of the carriage, just before the protagonists disembark.

If you're really determined to get to the bottom of this, I'll bet you could go down to the Hua Lamphong blue line train station and find station security personnel who were involved in this incident. BTW, that broadcast from Channel 3 says that the television station contacted sky train officials and independently confirmed what the dispute was about. Their reporting wasn't solely based on an eye witness's interpretation of what happen, but on their journalistic effort to investigate what happened. I think it's time to concede that what they reported is probably what happened.

I generally don't give moody looks to Thais because they often carry guns.

Threatening strangers isn't my bag but it appears it may be yours, even if by proxy.

That was my impression too, but in a city like Bangkok, Thais who are ethnic Chinese are definitely not uncommon.
