Ubon Ratchathani school shut for 2 days as influenza hits 200 students

Anuban Ban Nua Kemarat kindergarten in Ubon Ratchathani province announced it has closed for two days – January 28 and 29 – after some 200 students contracted influenza.

This comes as the Department of Disease Control identified the high trend of fever from the beginning of the year. As of January 20, there were 16,348 cases reported nationwide and 1 death.

There have also been fears over the novel coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, and is spreading worldwide.

School director Prayat Boonpor said local health officials advised him to close the school after such a large number of students in various classes were hit by influenza. The school is being thoroughly cleaned and classrooms sterilised during the two days.

Disease Control Department director-general Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen said his department has been monitoring influenza.

Influenza affects more people during January to March and in the early winter. The age group with the highest morbidity rate is 1 day-4 years, followed by 25-34 year-olds and those aged 7-9.

Some areas have been hit by a sudden drop in temperature. The body may not adjust to the cold weather in time, making it easy to get sick.

Influenza can be transmitted from exposure to mucus, saliva or phlegm in patients through coughing or sneezing. Flu can bring on severe muscle pain, headache and fatigue. However, patients normally heal in 5-7 days.

Has the School been inspected for the Corona Virus ? There is no mention of it in the report.

Symptoms are very much the same in the early stages.

No much chance of it being that I would say.

Kemarat is a district on the Mekong river.

No airport and not many tourists going there.

None of the Thai schools I’ve ever visited have had hand soap provided in the student rest rooms. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways of preventing flu contagion... amongst other things. It’s quite gross when you think that the kids use their hands and water to wash their backsides and then spread all sorts of nasties everywhere.

my kids always get sick in thai school as soon as they return from a holiday or long weekend and then we got the same. They clearly dont practice hygiene in schools with no soap and the drinking water smells like a toilet.

My kids, many years ago, always picked up illnesses at school, loads of kids in close

proximity harbouring different bugs is the perfect place to spread a virus.

That was in the UK and is probably the same the world over.

Pity Thai kids learning here, they are either never at school for mass silly holidays, can't go due to smog and banned due to flu !

(Note : word silly used as it's silly I cannot buy a beer !!)

what about the food they eat / serve in the school ... so many people get sick, maybe from a sick "cook" that loves to cough on everything

Polluted air  !!!!! weve been sick off & on for the last 8 weeks + most others round the provence.
