PHUKET: Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana on Monday (Feb 3) was handed a formal request for the government to provide up to B20 billion in assistance to tourism businesses suffering as the number of international tourist arrivals continues to plunge in the fallout from the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in China.

The same request had already been sent to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the Ministry Finance, explained Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, President of the Thailand Hotels Association Southern chapter, who was at the meeting at Provincial Hall on Monday.

Phuket Tourist Association President Bhummikitti Ruktaengam explained that the request for B20bn was for a worst-case scenario of the number of Chinese tourists falling by 90%.

for me a "worst case" is not 90% but 100%

if this 90% becomes 100% how many trillion will they ask for?

with or without interest to the key; it does not matter ...

The corona thing has absolutely nothing to do with a natural disaster;
it is a virus created from scratch by sorcerer's apprentices;
that they manage to fix their bulls*hit ..

So one month of low tourist numbers and they all ready put the hands out.. what happens to all the billions they raked in when the good times were rolling?...

And that is just Phuket. If they get anything every town, village or tree hut will want money!!!

Has anybody actually read the article? or is this just going to be yet another (deserved?) Thai bashing thread!

The article (surprisingly) makes sense, they are asking for loans to be available at 2%.

Yes. Loans at 2% (soft money) modeled on the loans given after the 2005 Tsunami

These so called " Business,s " were started by people with a get rich quick idea, which was to relieve as many Tourists as possible of their hard earned Money.

Well they succeeded, but now there are no easy pickings, only a carcass of a Chinese Tourist Industry.

Any business with any nounce would have a" Rainy Day " fund to take care of the slack times.

We are only about 3 weeks into this Virus thing, and already they are sticking their grubby mitts out for help.

Poor Business people, who really should be allowed to slip into oblivion, and allow the better run Business,s to shine through.

No tourists can you bail us out while we sit on our thumbs for the next 3 months!

I wonder where all this bail-out money is coming from?

Fishermen, farmers, rubber plantation owners, rice farmers etc etc etc all asking for a free hand-out.

someone is getting taxed to hell.... but I've never met anyone who pays it?

And loans are, of course, always repaid by Thai people - yes?

Sorry I don't have this privileged information, though I would say that if the larger conglomerates/International hotels are borrowing money that it would be repaid, what do you think? Based on how well Thai banks are performing I would guess that most are repaying their loans!

Your post has an undertone of yet another "Thai knocking" - hope not as it is so easy and frankly gets boring ????
