This statement makes no sense at all. What type of farang food is only worth 50 baht in your mind?

In the USA you cannot get a hamburger for 50 baht, so why would the same hamburger in Thailand only be worth 50 baht? Imported foods cost more. But imported foods cost more in any country.

Most of us can cook at home.

I had a very nice roast pork steak and chips for lunch yesterday, cost me 25-30bht, paying 150bht for something similar in a restaurant is just not worthwhile. (42bht for two Tesco pork steaks, 125bht for 2Kg of Makro frozen chips)

Then I had pizza with pork/bell pepper/mushroom toppings for dinner, cost about 30bht (mainly for the mozzarella cheese), that would have been another 150bht from the pizza shops.

In the evening I baked 1/2Kg of oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies, cost about 20bht

If you're not stupid, most western foods can be made from local products, no need to pay imported food prices.

  • Thank you for a dose of realism...   Expect backlash from the usual Thai apologist crowd!

  • Well said. That sums up the thread and is good advice for the OP and the cohort of pitiful misfits who dominate ThaiVisa CM Forum.

Tourists visit for like 5 or 6 days. They dont care about dive bars and beer prices. The countryside is nice. The city has always been dull. Bangkok has the best nightlife. Go there.

Probably one of the saddest topics I have read on TV.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Don't know how many beers you drink but $4 wont get you any where near drunk in Vietnam!

this can get you 16 street-beers which is enough to intoxicate most people.

"After having finished there I went from bar to bar in populair areas, Loy kroh, Santitham and Nimman, all quiet and suffering basically (unless counting the few ones who do well)."

So you were driving the motorbike you picked up to and from all these places getting drunk?

It's tough for the bars, Wholesale alcohol is almost non existent, rents are overpriced and they pad the electric bill,

the police want their ever increasing tea money every month

regarding the bar staff...  hard to get and don't hang around long if their not making good money in tips (which is rare these days)

making your bar the cheapest in town brings the dickheads too

If you want better looking bargirls, I suggest you wait until after dark.

Or get those beer goggles on earlier!!

Pretty sad when one is measuring their enjoyment of life by how much it costs to get drunk.

I'd agree Chiang Mai is going downhill, vacancy rates in condos are very high. I'd hate to be trying to sell a condo or house at present.

What's the point of living in Chiang Mai? The city is boring after 10 days. People watching and walking in Bangkok is great. In Chiang Mai it's like the people are half dead. Plus Bangkok is a drive away from beach or short train rides.
