I have never seen a pick-up with a towbar and a trailer, they could carry 2 times the weight with a trailer instead of being over-loaded with rice ect, is it illegal or do people need a special licence?

Posted

I have wondered about that too. The other day I saw a pickup with a very nice trailer, which I noticed because I can't recall the last time I saw that here. It would certainly be quite easy and cheap to have a nice trailer made.

If i get a chance today, gonna look under brother-in-laws ranger, to see if it has the nesasary places to fit a tow-bar, then look for a kit for it, that will be a full time job i reckon, but if this caught on, think what a big time market someboby could have, fitting towbars and making trailers!!

Farma, just the sort of trailer i was thinking of!! and they make them here in Thai, unbelievable!! nobody uses them? I know a lot of thai drivers have trouble going forwards so backing a trailer for them might be asking too much, if i can find a towbar for the ranger i will buy a trailer just to show the locals capacities ect, then get ms to become an agent, ohhh , back to my roots, mechanic, mmm...

I have a pickup with a tow bar fitted .

If I remember correctly the bar and stainless steel 'bull-bar ' it is on cost me 5000Bt fitted.

I tow a boat on a trailer here and have never been stopped or challenged about it .

A lot of Thais tow there working boats home in Patts so it seems OK to do this.

I hope this is of help!

Dear God, please dont let this become a popular device for the average thai driver. Amen

My work car is a ford ranger made in Thailand. It comes with a ford dealership fitted towbar that looks like a 1” x 3” bar protruding through a cutout in the bumper.

The towing load is 800 kilos but I regularly tow weights heavier than that on private roads. The diesel engine doesn’t have a problem but braking with a heavy load needs some prior planning. :o

Interesting. I have been somewhat involved with trying to market trailers in Thailand but it's just something people are not familiar with. When you let them actually try it, i.e. being able to transport TWICE the load with GREATER safety and maneuverability WITHOUT requiring a whole extra truck & driver, then people do like it a lot.

They're not THAT cheap though, especially not cheap if you want a tow-hitch system similar to those used in the west (ball etc.) with electricity connectors for the indicators, brake & rear lights, and with active braking wheels. In fact nice 4 wheel trailers with wheels & axles actually designed for heavy loads approach the price of a really old second hand pick-up. Of course this cost could be brought down with using more local parts and sort of jerry-rigging any lighting, etc. (or, more likely, doing away with lighting, indicators and brake-light pass through altogether. :o )

The one on the picture I think is more of an agricultural use thingy for farms.. doubt it has indicators & brake lights. To register a trailer for legal road use I think it does need to have those things. Then the trailer gets its own license plate. (So not the same license plate number as the pulling vehicle like in Europe for example)

The one in the pic looks very similar to the standard 6 x 4 trailers sold in Oz. I’ve also seen similar ones made in Germany. They are light strong and versatile.

Lighting isn’t a problem. A couple of simple light clusters readily available in auto spares shops, a bit of simple wiring, fit a plug and it’s ready for the road. I’ve wired a few trailers and cars for towing and the job isn’t hard.

In my days as a heavy wrecker driver in UK, used to have a lighting board to hang on back of broken down truck in a lift and tow situation, cheap plastic thing with all the ness lights and number on it, used to cost about 800bht, and easy to fit, 2 gungy bands and plug it into truck and away you go!! LEGAL!!previous poster stated that a trailer had to have its own number, not a prob if you only have 1 trailer, perhaps they could get away with a rotating orange beacon even, that would be better than the CD discs we see on iron buffalo trailers!! coments welcome!! Lickey..

yeah, i can do that too farma. Now interesting to find out if "auto electrician" is a barred farang work category?

How do you remember which of the green & yellow wires for the indicators are which?

Easy: yellow has L's in in it for Left, Green has an R in it for Right ;-)

There is a company in Korat that has been making trailers for many years, I believe that to be legal the trailer has to be registered and insured and have its own separate licence plate.

Here is the link http://www.trailersthai.com/

Thanks for that link!!

But that's what I was getting at: Bet those trailers pictured aren't cheap, and cost about the same as an old pick-up. (Like I'm guessing this one http://www.trailersthai.com/tr7.html would be around 150K baht.

I hope I'm wrong though. (Still that's a whole lot of melons or cabbages that baby can haul. :o )

I bought one of those trailers from Thai Trailers in Korat, it was a flat bed version (i.e. without the cage) and cost Bt160K with ramps. I use it for carting farm machinery around.

The chassis and braking mechanism are made in Germany.

they are legal and yes you need to get the trailer registered which used to be a pain in the back side but we can get our trailers registered now

Just send me a PM and I will point you in the right direction as I mentioned many times I do make trailers in Thailand starting from the standard 6x4 and any other types of trailers required. All our trailers have light fittings, tow bars made to order ( included in price ) and licence if required

Oh dont, the thais are bad enough on the road as it is !,. but yes they are available and its legal, but you dont see a lot do you,..i see it like giving a farmer a wheel barrow, they wont use one and prefer doing it the hard way,.... :o

I have a friend who tows generators behind his pick-up for generating electricity for music, weddings, funerals and the like. He gets stopped and fined almost every time. He loads his costs to cover the fines. Apparently the police do not liuke trailers. Whether they are illegal or not I do not know, but you rarely see any on the roads here. That has to tell you something.

because he has not got a licence for his trailer we have sold many trailers now, all different types starting from box trailers motorcycle trailers trailers to carry tractors and so on we just finished building 10 trailers for wood chipping machines and not one our clients has been stopped or fined for

towing a trailer because our trailers are licensed like any car you drive :o

Do you build boat trailers too?? Because I'm looking for a good one, with omologation, lights, etc, for my 6 mt. fiberglass boat.
