Thai exports totalled US$ 20.641 billion in February, shrinking 4.47 per cent year on year, said Pimchanok Wonkorporn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, today (March 23).

“However, when removing gold, oils and weapons from the tally, export expanded 1.5 per cent,” she said. “Combining the first two months of 2020, Thailand’s exports stood at $40.2675 billion, down 0.81 per cent from the same period last year”.

Imports in January and February amounted to $37.9259 billion, decreasing 6.32 per cent year on year, but still leaving a surplus of $2.3416 billion in Thailand's favour.

“Major factors that affected February’s export were the trade war, plummeting oil prices and the Covid-19 outbreak that had slowed China’s import from Thailand,” said Pimchanok.

“Furthermore, the outbreak had caused many countries to close their borders and limited transportation routes which resulted in lower demands for products from Thailand.”

Thailand’s top ten export products are: Automotive components, computer components, gold, rubber, oils, plastic beads, machinery components, chemicals, jewelries and air conditioners.

I have no idea on the accuracy of the specific numbers but presumably she means for a like for like comparison. But of course all the previous posters knew that really.......

Just doesn't make for such "amusing" narrative of course........

However you slice it they still have a trade surplus.

I can't comment because I don't have the education which would make any comment sensible, but if there is a trade surplus at the moment, it isn't going to last for very long. Human nature will see to that, and that's something I *do* know about.

I think the only people that believe these figures are probably ones that believe in Santa Claus, The Easter bunny, The tooth fairy and sticking a banana up your nose, ears and mouth will stop the covid virus

So you have better numbers or only the feeling that they are not true? Were export related factories closed in February? No! Are they closed in March? No! Because the virus the demand for by example cars will be lower, so this will effect the exports.

Believing or not is an experience-based opinion and is not in the slightest based on whether the person expressing a view has a better set of data.

Apples are apples and bananas are bananas. Never the 'twain shall meet.
