Ayutthaya has reported the first case of Covid-19 in the province.

Governor Phanu Yaemsri said on Tuesday (March 24) that the patient was a local of Maharat district. “He had close contact with an infected person who had been to Lumpini Boxing Stadium in Bangkok."

The boxing stadium has emerged as a hotbed of Covid-19, as the Ministry of Public Health revealed a boxing event held there was responsible for a sharp rise in the number of infected patients in Thailand. The event host and actor, Matthew “Deane” Chanthavanij, also revealed in a short video posted on Instagram on March 13 that he was infected with the Covid-19 virus.

“The patient was sent to Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute for treatment,” added the governor.

As for those who have lived in the same house as the patient, including his wife, daughter and niece, they have been told to remain in self-quarantine for 14 days, while further investigation is underway.

Interesting to see that we now have various province governors (Ayudhya here and Phuket in a separate thread today) reporting their own local COVID cases.

There was an earlier time when the governors supposedly were muzzled and the only source for COVID cases info was supposed to be coming from the MoPH announcements in BKK.  That appears to have either officially changed or is breaking down in practical terms.
