Kanchanaburi under toxic haze as garbage dump blazes

A large area of Kanchanaburi province was shrouded in stinking toxic smoke on Monday (April 13) after a fire tore through garbage piled at a 3-rai dump in Sangkhlaburi district.

The trash dump is located on the Myanmar border near a community of sugarcane farmers.

Kanchanaburi officials sent two fire trucks but efforts to extinguish the flames were hampered by plastics in the garbage that were fuelling the intense blaze.

As smoke from the fire spread, residents in Sangkhlaburi district and parts of neighbouring Myanmar were hit by a foul-smelling haze.

Authorities suspect the blaze was set by villagers in the nearby sugarcane farming community as a way of scavenging metal scrap from the dump to sell. They currently store some of the scavenged metal in huts they have built especially for that purpose nearby.

Kanchanaburi has been suffering from serious air pollution caused by illegal fire-setting for the past two months. Local government organisations have ordered strict monitoring of the situation.

Just horrible. Disgusting.

And what exactly were they planning to do with this 3 rai rubbish dump before the arson?

My guess is they planned to burn it anyway, but after the restrictions are lifted. That's what is happening in the villages north of Chiang Mai where I live. Open dumps piling up with plastic, toxic waste, getting higher every day. No proper processing facilities. They will all be burned in May.

If and a big IF this is a legal trash dump put heavy equipment on it and compact it at night cover it with 15cm of dirt. This is the way a proper dump is handled.

Hmm, i suspect they are right. Now they can top off a very successful sugar cane burning season debacle by burning the garbage dump in celebration! Add in a few bottles of red fanta at the alter and they are ready for the new season.

Plus Ive noticed our neighbours have started burning household rubish in their gardens ,whereas before they used the plastic bags shops gave out, fill up and put them in village collection places later. Now those colection places are  not overflowing anymore. Any of you notice that your  litter bin by the P.C. has no 7/11 liner anymore.
