Popular Post vogie
What we have to do is to turn a negative situation into positive one and if Mohamid cannot go to the mountain the mountain must come to Mohamid. They need to have blanket rules, without exception or grey areas... in order to avoid ambiguity. Like most on this forum, we're happy to enjoy a quiet drink in sensible ways, but the locals (the vast majority) only drink in groups. Not only locals because even some farangs cannot abide by the restrictions because they think they are above the law.

Fear perhaps is looking to stir things up. Fear is adding cheap lao khao to above will only inflame situation. One thing certain. There's no plan and huge concerns from powers be. Given that Thailand has arguably one of lowest infection rates it's impossible to rationalize the lockdown - and no one's even tried. Therein lies your answer. Maybe it is because of the lockdown and the ban on alcohol sales that has given Thailand the low infection rate and helped to keep it low. Think about that. Think about that. Correlation does not necessitate causation especially when Thailand does not test outside hospitals. The numbers aren't even close to being correct. But if this were the case drinking alcohol does not raise opportunities to contract covid. Nothing. Rather the police due to incompetence and corruption cannot keep clubs closed and people off the streets so we have draconian measures not taken in any other country. Popular Post OneeyedJohn
I just popped out on my bike to check with our wholesaler, a couple of minutes away, he has no beer on display, but assured me he would have beer on Friday. When I came back here there were over 20 new replies. My current stock at home has a manufacture date of 180320. 1

There will be tanks in the brewery that have been sitting full of beer that needs processed and bottled. Suspect it will be vile by now but they will not want to throw it away. Warehouse is already full because the wholesalers are closed so there it has sat with no-where to go. This will allow the production chain to start moving again to clear those tanks and allow them to be cleaned. Agreed. There's going to be some nasty tasting beers here for the foreseeable future. Right before the ban, I went to the local distributor and asked for the newest batch. Dates on the boxes were Jan 31. Imagine now how many older beers are sitting around in the heat getting worse by the day. 3

This makes no sense. You would have crowds of people lining up shoulder to shoulder. Also after the first hour or two the store would be depleted and though it would be legal to sell, they would not have any beer, wine, or liquor.
Digby Strong
2 hours ago, 2long said: There IS some sense in it. Read on... Common sense would suggest that the reason for banning the booze is to prevent Somchais from sitting in groups and drinking, then after killing some brain cells going off to do other inappropriate things which would spread the virus, such as returning to hug and kiss family members. Without 'generalising' I think it's fair to say that the government mainly target low-income Thai males as the target group to control in this case. From experience, these guys are completely incapable of buying in advance and rationing the booze for even a few days, never mind a month. This is partly because they don't have the money, and mainly because they can't control themselves or trust their buddies not to cheat. They drink all they have until it's gone. In this sense, the 2-day window and a new ban makes sense, allowing expats and more wealthy to stock up and ration. Yes, I understand the reasoning, here, but don't quite "get" the TIMING... (a) we still don't know whether May public holidays, including that on Friday (Labor Day), are going to be cancelled (to encourage continued social distancing), and (b) why just TWO days duration (maximum panic buying, minimum social distancing)? Authoritarian muscle flexing?? Liver applauding, but brain leans towards conjecture when in need of a beer!!

The main reason for the ban is not simply to prevent socialising. 40% of hospital A&E cases before the ban were related to alcohol. This is now down to 15%. Banning alcohol frees up much needed healthcare staff and beds for Coronavirus. Despite what the government says Coronavirus is ripping through Thailand. Daily death rates in April 2020 are almost 3 times the norm. In April 2013-18 it ran at 400 per day. In April 2020 its running at 1300 per day which is 900 more than they would expect. The official figures are kept low to prevent social unrest. Expect the heavy ban to last well into the summer/autumn but it may be partially lifted for a few days to allow you to stock up. However the days of constant binge drinking are over and this will probably be the new norm going forwards. 1 2 1
