  • There IS some sense in it. Read on... Common sense would suggest that the reason for banning the booze is to prevent Somchais from sitting in groups and drinking, then after killing some brain ce

Without 'generalising' I think it's fair to say that the government mainly target low-income Thai males as the target group to control in this case. From experience, these guys are completely incapable of buying in advance and rationing the booze for even a few days, never mind a month. This is partly because they don't have the money, and mainly because they can't control themselves or trust their buddies not to cheat. They drink all they have until it's gone.

In this sense, the 2-day window and a new ban makes sense, allowing expats and more wealthy to stock up and ration.

Sorry, but from my experience I think this is flawed logic. The after work beverages of choice for the low income male, particularly in the sticks where I live is locally and illegally produced Lao Khao and Ya Dong.

Not everywhere, many mom & pop shops sold out.

I wonder if there is another reason why alcohol has been banned; domestic violence, which is rampant in Thailand and of course many other countries and in many cases the arguments and violence brought on by or flamed by excessive alcohol use.

I think in that case that alcohol is not the problem but the person that drinks it, we are all responsible for our own actions, drunk or sober. Responible drinkers should not have to pay a penalty for few that cannot control themselves, I wouldn't mind betting that these same drunks are a menace sober too.

Thanks for the nice textbook lecture, not really the point, is it?

Here is my concern with a two day allowance.  Logistics!  Will the manufactures be able to meet the demand?  How soon could the Thai Beverage logistics start rolling, i would say you would need 2 days just to bring the booze to the markets per say.   Even Makro may only keep a pallet of blend or sam song in stock, all the local shops are empty.  I am sure many of the local warehouses are empty as well.  They would have to release the logistics 2 days prior or it will be a mad house, and stock will be gone within an hour.  Then you will have people sitting at the shops waiting on deliveries, that is a social distancing nightmare.

Interesting you should say this.

I noticed a couple of weeks before the ban was even mentioned that stocks of some beers and wines had almost completely gone at our Big C. I remember buying the last 2 boxes of white wine and I noticed that the shelves of whiskey and spirits were also quite low. I said to my friend that at this rate it wouldn't be necessary to impose a ban on sales of alcohol.

Have they restocked during the ban? I don't know. The alcohol section is completely closed off so I can't see, but knowing their logistics, I doubt it very much.

But  "many more" people are still  congregating at every street market in East Pattaya  and have done since the start of this virus...So why the ban?

actonion Exactly

Gob <deleted> there should not be a ban this is out of order and by the way you can still get beer but at higher cost. Plusr they say let people stock up for 2 days they are talking thoughthere bum hole the ones doing the beer ban stock up and theres no ban cos you can a months supply get real knob heads

I just flagged down the truck that delivers booze and other things to the village, one of those cash trucks.  I know the guy and he said a 2 day opening of the ban, will mean nothing up here as there warehouse is completely empty, side deals and what not.  He said maybe 3 to 5 days before they are back up and stocked, Bangkok will get it first.   So two days of sales, is gonna be a rat <deleted> of a trick on the people up here in Issaan

Except of the Middle East or Muslim countries, I have never seen a country with so many 'intermittent' alcohol bans.

Then again, I haven't been to all countries in the world. There might be similar others?

Does anybody know if the breweries are closed? Or running at a lower capacity?

It is not easy for the government. They see the problems they create with the alcohol ban but for sure they are also aware of the problems without a ban. I saw it here in Pattaya. People gathered drinking alcohol at many places without any social distancing and to be able to drink of course without any masks. But this is only one of the problems. Many people are desperate at the moment and could use alcohol to get over it. And not all can handle it. Would lead to violence, accidents, crimes, suicides, ...

Biggest bunch of Morons making decisions based on no evidence. Pathetic country

basically , as with everything else, Thai gov doesnt trust the people that"elected" it. Let the irrelevant measures which wont make a difference to any virus continue

And doesn't get jealous if you have another beer plus you don't have to talk to it afterwards.

Well, of course it will be a complete and upper cock up, it is being instigated by the government. Literally, a booze up in a brewery!

If you’re on lockdown in hotel & have to go to restaurant for all your food as no cooking fascilities, your keeping your distance from others as implicated by the restaurant, why can’t you get a drink to accompany your meal ? Your not out socializing.

Alcoholics are salivating.

A population that agrees to be "locked up" not work, not socialise for the crime of being healthy deserves no more?

If folks haven't realised yet, there is another agenda at play! you don't lock down 99.9% of the world's population because their immune systems are working!

Unless you are Bill "Kill Bill" Gates, who seems to have appointed himself the new world health minister and has a "Plan" Lord help us !!!:shock1:

Obviously, the alcohol ban passed you by!

More about shifting stock than anything else. There will be tanks in the brewery that have been sitting full of beer that needs processed and bottled. Suspect it will be vile by now but they will not want to throw it away. Warehouse is already full because the wholesalers are closed so there it has sat with no-where to go.

This will allow the production chain to start moving again to clear those tanks and allow them to be cleaned.

Sadly, the central governments can't leave common sense to decide what's acceptable and what's not.

They need to have blanket rules, without exception or grey areas... in order to avoid ambiguity.

Like most on this forum, we're happy to enjoy a quiet drink in sensible ways, but the locals (the vast majority) only drink in groups.

Powers that be are afraid of lifting lockdown bc the economy is ruined and 8m people unemployed. Fear perhaps is looking to stir things up.

Fear is adding cheap lao khao to above will only inflame situation.

One thing certain. There's no plan and huge concerns from powers be.

Given that Thailand has arguably one of lowest infection rates it's impossible to rationalize the lockdown - and no one's even tried. Therein lies your answer.
