Sorry but I tri d to get information of websites but was a bit confusing .We are looking to head back to australia soon, my question is what are my options in getting my son who was born in Thailand back to australia . Is it best to get his Thai passport and a visa? But I looked up the visa option for a child and it's over $2500.. can he use a tourist visa ? But under the circumstances I don't know if it's possible. If so can I apply for his Australian passport once I arrive in Australia ? Or is my only option to try and get his Australian passport while still in thailand?

Your son would be refused this visa.

No, your best option is to get Citizenship by descent first, what passport he holds doesn't matter accept making the process of traveling to Australia easier.

Citizenship by decent in Thailand best option - Documentation much easier there, as in Auss you have to get all Notarized (maybe 4 ), even though Auss embassy (VFS) except thai translations when applying for visa in Thailand but are no good in Auss

This may take 4 mths - best to do as Auss Gov wont let anyone else in, in a hurry & will take a lot longer for International travel to start back up then other countries ( nannies yet again )

Im still waiting for wife & sons tourist Visa (applied online in Thailand )

Read an article the other day & they have cut entries for all visas big time,no doubt due to CV 19

But if you ever decide to go back you will need a Thai passport or face the same process you go through

OP: My stepson has dual Thai / Oz citizenship - loves the opportunities / flexibility.

Assuming you will be travelling with the mother or have her consent for the child's overseas travel, your son should enjoy the benefit of dual Thai / Oz citizenship. As said above obtain Oz citizenship by descent and a Thai passport. Son can depart and enter Thailand without a visa on a Thai passport, same with Australia. with Oz passport. Additional benefit of being an Australian passport holder is ease of international travel, access to Oz schooling etc etc.
