Cambodia poised to be big Covid-19 loser

Kingdom has relatively few virus cases and deaths but pandemic’s impacts could be fatal to the economy

Cambodia, despite reporting fewer coronavirus cases than most of its neighbors, could be among the region’s biggest Covid-19 losers due to economic and financial contagion effects.

The country’s most crucial business sectors, including tourism and garment manufacturing, have ground to a virtual halt since the pandemic first emerged in China in January and thereafter spread worldwide.

Cambodia’s tourism industry, which usually contributes around one-third of gross domestic product (GDP), is now dead in the water due to the lack of mainly Chinese tourists, who make up the bulk of visitors.

What I don,t understand is that western countries appear to be the most affected places (if the media is to be believed) yet the numerically safer Asian countries seem to be taking the greater economical hit ???? Probably because the tourist dollar represents a greater proportion of the nation,s income than in the western world ?

Nobody is buying stuff in the western world so all the stuff that Cambodia produces in their garment/stuff factory's is not wanted. The countries that produce stuff take the hit.

The clothing retailers in the UK are not selling their summer collections and have cancelled orders, this has led to 4 million people in Bangladesh losing their jobs. The knock on effect from western lockdowns is far reaching and trickles down the chain.

so Best & Less in Australia will not be putting in new orders for Bangladesh clothing for some time ....  essentially thousands upon thousands have lost jobs both in Aussie stores, shipping, Bangladesh factories.

The tourist input is very important to a countries finances, not that one would think so in Cambodia with its 30 usd visa charge and the way tats  been performing.

And most people seem to be in denial of the fact.

The economic outlook is bleak, just been reading about the UK and EU this morning. Countries in Asia that rely on tourists are going to find it hard and countries that manufacture clothing will find it hard. I said at the start that these lockdowns were ecomonic suicide, well, one country seems to be doing better than most!

You will be made very welcome once borders open. Here in Siem Reap, many bars and restaurants open. No ban on alcohol. No lock-downs or curfews. Face masks not mandatory. Yes, many of the big "tourist" outlets are closed in Pub Street (no tourists) but there is plenty of enjoyment and entertainment for the Khmer locals, us ex-pats and "stranded" tourists. Freedom to wander within City limits!!

Are the virus numbers legit? they look questionably low

agree 100% .... i'm amazed that governments continue to give BS numbers about unemployment ...

they say in Australia unemployment may reach 10% .....  what absolute garbage they spew ....

In reality .... try 14-16 %  and possibly higher toward the second half of 2020.  The fact is that it affects thousands upon thousands down the line .... that runs into millions eventually.

The world has hit a bump in the road and it won't come back anytime soon ..... just too many with no money and the population is so high everywhere that there will never be enough jobs .... and if no one has any money to spend then ..no customers, no business, no jobs.

Cambodia has a proud tradition of looking after their people you,'ve only got to look back to the 70s to see that.

Ever heard of the Khymer Rouge genocide 1975-79 ...looks like that was in 70's.

I hope the country rises and kicks Hun Sen out, he has a lot to answer for, cosying up to China being the main issue.
