Looking for somewhere new to go on holidays with the family

Featured Replies

We live in the north-east and have just about travelled to every corner of Thailand and are looking for somewhere new to go and as long as its the coast, were happy, need to see the ocean, put our feet in the sand, etc, etc, etc.

We have been to Phuket and surrounds, Krabi and surrounds, Ko Lanta, and further south through Trang to Songhkla, also been to Pattaya, Rayong, Hua Hin, and Prachuap Khiri Khan and are now looking to go to perhaps some island which one can also get their car too, and is not too touristy if possible.

It can also be the mainland as long as it's not too touristy, lol, I say that now that no tourists are coming.

I'm thinking this will be good for the kids to chill before returning to school come 1 July because they will be studying for 8 months straight with no holidays, then I will take them to Sydney again come April as they really enjoyed that last trip last October.

This is assuming they allow hotels to open up around 1 June and allow us to travel through other provinces.

Have car, will travel.

All suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

Plenty of people mention Vietnam as an alternative to holidaying in Thailand.

Koh Chang is also an option. Koh Kood for somewhere quieter.

How many islands are there that you can get your car too here? You would surely already know about them.

There are a couple of small islands off Phuket that are very nice, 25 min in speedboat, but certainly can't take the motor. Let me know if you want to know the names.

Btw, I wouldn't be so sure the schools will stay open in October. My one said that initially (private school) but are now backtracking..

Khanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat,

Good choice. Khanom is quiet, great beaches, inexpensive. My wife is from Nakhon Si Thammarat City, so we head up to Khanom after visiting there quite often.

Hoi an or da nang in Vietnam if you want to leave the country when can .

Khanom is very very quiet but as people said it’s nice and very cheap.

I have lived on Koh Samui for the last 15 years and have watched it develope into a lovely Island.  Sure there are busy touristy places (when we have tourists!), which can be fun to visit, but there are other areas that are lovely and quiet (like our little Family Resort only 300 meters from the beach) with a plethora of interesting sites to visit, both on and off the Island (day trips).  If I can help further, please pm and we would be delighted to send you additional details.

Have you tried a day trip to Suvarnabhumi.  Lots of places to eat and nice and quiet at this time of year.  Very clean too and you can get a free health check whilst you're there.

Most islands are not "touristy" at the moment.

A place to bring your car to, and not too touristy, could be Ko Phangan – neighboring island to Koh Samui – there is a car ferry departing from Don Sak near Surat Thani on the mainland, at least once a day (used to be more, but might be less traffic during the Covid-19 restricted period). You can easily find places not too touristy there, however avoid Haad Rhin at the south eastern tip.

Neighboring Koh Samui has severeal car ferries a day from two ferry lines – Raja and Seatran – both departing from Don Sak, but might be more touristy; however there are several nice beaches and spots only little developed into tourism, especially on the southern part, and the south western part, of the island.

In contrast, i lived on samui for a few months back in 83 and have been there many times since.

My last trip back there was in 2012. Will never return, an overpriced, unfriendly expensive,(even compared to Phuket)  tourist island..

We clearly have different tastes and mix in different circles.  I am very fortunate that I have a lovely, loving Thai Wife and lots of Thai Friends whom are great to socialise with.  Koh Samui is a much more welcoming place than Phuket.  I have been there twice and sorry to say, will not return, but what ever turns you on.

I've lived on Samui for more than a few month since 2001, actually permanent resident since 2005, and I don't regret it; whilst Phuket – which I carefully checked several times as an option to settle on – was not really my cup of tea.

I love to stay on Samui, friendly people that always welcomes me, fair prices – bear in mind that it's an island with ferry connection, so certain things, like gasoline, are little higher priced than on the mainland – and plenty of nice areas without being too touristy or too crowded.

Just mentioned for balance in posts. We are all different, and have different preferences, and have different opinions...????
