What is testosterone? 

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and anabolic steroid. In male humans, testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle and bone mass, and the growth of body hair.

Professor Gülsah Gabriel from the Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology in Hamburg, who has led the study, found that not only are men twice as likely to die from the coronavirus but also that the male sex hormone testosterone plays a key role. 

 

The hormone is known to help regulate the body's immune response but when a man has low levels of testosterone, the immune system is not kept in check and can collapse into what is known as Cytokine storm.  It’s this Cytokine storm, where the body attacks itself, which is responsible for the death of so many intensive care patients.
